I think it's whining 'cause it has smelled the cold air and wants to go play.

No, mine hasn't gotten any louder over the past few months. That's why I haven't worried about it. It doesn't sound like a bearing to me, and it only does it for about 5 seconds max, so I don't think that's enough time for a bearing to heat up and stop whining.
Good luck and let us know if you fix it.

Oh, and I'm positive it's not coming from the belt. It sounds nothing like a belt squeal.

Mine was the alternator, once I got the belt off, I spun it by hand and could hear it grind. I'd pull the belt off the idler so you have some slack and start turning stuff, see if something sounds "off".

i had the grinding already from the alt. Swapped it with a new one and it stopped. Now it's more of a squicking. I guess it wont hurt to check. i know a new alt can also be another bad alt. thanks

Used the screwdriver trick for a scope on the alternator and sounded like a very rough grinding inside so I pulled the belt off and the alternator does have a grinding noise inside when spinning pulley. I think you guys are right on with saying the alternator now I wonder if the 7/70 powertrain warranty covers this? Anyone know? Or I'll call dealer tom. Thanks

Well I put a new alternator on and I have a louder whine now. So I change the belt thinking just maybe thats it but that did'nt make a diff. When turning the pulley on new alt. there is no noise at all and it is charging bat. fine. So I'm stumped here. I'm going north deer hunting this weekend about 400 miles and wanted to get rid of this noise but I might as well just let it get worse so I can find out whats wrong. I't will probably die half way there!!
