I actually got to look under one of the new ones the other day, and they use the same frame as ours. I would say to do what I plan to do, which is adopt a rear coil suspension from the new ones and convert to four link and coils. The front end is pretty sturdy, but still livable to begin with.
I was just wondering to myself not too long ago how feasible it would be to mount new rear suspension in a previous gen.
It's actually fairly straight forward. All you would have to do is weld up the mounts for the links and springs, get the links and sways with associated hardware, and get the new rear axle.
