Default Newbie problems with MPG

I have a 2006 2500 hemi that I recently bought and is only getting 8.3 city and 10.6 highway according to the upper console. I am also using a Superchips programmer and currently have it on 87 octane economy mode. Could that be my problem? How can i get better MPG?

Try actually checking the mileage buy filling it up, reset the trip meter, drive it until it needs gas, then refill the tank. Divide the miles driven by gallons used and get the real number.

Ok I know that a small car would be better on gas that's not the sort of answers I was looking for. I came here for help because I see people on this sight with the same trucks that get 3-4MPG better than me. Thanks lxman that's the sort of answer I was looking for im gonna try that. Is the upper console usually wrong with the MPG?

You gotta forgive these old timers here. Do a search for MPG problems here and you'll find it's the single most posted question. Guys just get tired of reading it day after day after day.
First, as lxman says, hand calculate it. I've seen the overhead consistently be off by 4-5 mpg, either direction.
Then do a search, you'll probably find a couple hundred threads with suggestions...

Run it on the regular not the economy 87 tune my truck got about another mpg and the power and throttle is sharpened some over stock. You are gonna have to hand calc too that overhead mileage thing is hardly accurate the only thing it is good for is to sort of estimate how much fuel you are using and to impress buddies with low single digits when under full throttle. Still do not expect much over 12 or 13 on your hand calcs.

Most find the 87 octane tune is the WORST tune for fuel economy, it de-tunes the truck so you can safely run 87 instead of the factory recommended 89 octane for penny pinchers. Most find that fuel economy is greatest with the performance (91) octane tune and 93 octane gas.

Also, and I know it's been stated 322,394 times in threads, but when is the last time you cleaned your TB? Probably just as much of a MPG robber as running with bad plugs...
