Exclamation Changing to 4x4

My 2002 Ram 1500 has the manual 4x4 stick. On the owners manual does not specify how to change between 2, 4L, and 4H. do i have to stop and put en neutral to change or i can do it on the fly? Sorry for the stupid question.

can do it on the fly for 4HI but have to be at a stop for 4LO , also if your doing it on the fly you cant be spinning the rear tires and trying to switch it to 4HI it will grind

4WD HI you can be going up to 55 MPH to engage it on the fly. Make sure your tires are not spinning and let off the gas while you switch. 4WD LO you can be stopped and transmission in Neutral, but I've read that while you're in Neutral you should try to be rolling around 3 MPH just so gears don't clash while you engage it and your top speed in 4WD LO will be like 25 MPH.

i don't get this: You can engage at 55 mph but make sure the tires are not spinning?

Like losing traction spinning. Basically don't stay in the throttle while you engage it. Always let off the gas before engaging. Don't start fishtailing, keep your foot on the gas and try to engage it.

agreed. 4hi can be on the fly as long as you aren't spinning the rears faster than the front.

4 low you engage doing slow roll.

Your tires are spinning at 55mph? LOL

Hows about, breaking traction. That should make more sense.

well put. you can do it under a bit of power too if you have to. but best practice is to let off the gas.
