5w-20 became the standard for the 4.7L in 2007. I think mainly due to the switch to FFV so I've been running it in my truck since 2007. I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W-20 and it has worked great.

I know my cap says 5w-30 but I use 5w-20 in mine.

I think Bolt uses it in his, as well. Don't quote me on that, though.

I believe Bolt said his specifies 5w-20 on the cap. Mine specifies 5w-30, I ran Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 for over 8k miles (rollover happened about 6k miles into that) and had favorable test results from Blackstone Labs when I changed it out, they told me to run it longer and check back. Switched to Amsoil 5w-30 since then, the series 2000 is a bit too pricey.

Hammer, I'd run it for 3k miles or a little more, take a sample and send it for an oil analysis. That should give you a good idea how it's doing for you.

Yeah Frenchy and Rich are right. I run 5w-20 in mine and its not a FFV because it was bought out of New York, possible reasoning, but not on this one. It calls for it in the manual and on the cap. No problems so far

I guess my problem is why did the engineers who designed this thing originally spec 10w-30? Then decided to go right thru 5w-30 all the way to 5w-20. And also, did anybody consider that the HO version might be different? Is 5w-20 just the blanket, use in all, oil for Chrysler now?
I'm all for performance and increased MPG and all that, but is my engine that is about to hit 90k miles getting the protection it needs? I guess I can't trust stealerships and need more info...

I'd say it's more of a convienence factor and profitibility argin that they do 5w-20. Sure it may help on the sludge problem, but your engine was specifically built for 10w-30. Running a thinner oil helps get oil quicker, but also allows more slack in bearing tolerances compared to when 10w-30 is used.
I could see how a thinner il would aid in helping with a sludge problem, but if your a reg oil changer and since you use Synthetic oil, i don't see how sludge can be of issue. Sludge is more of a problem with conventional oils from what i understand.

Most all new cars are 5w20. I think the European Benz cars use 0W20. I always used 5w20 in my 01 5.4L F150 with no problems. Towed 7500lbs in 98 degree weather with the a/c on and it never made a noise or used any oil between 5K mile oil changes.
I'd doubt with the care that you take with your vehicles that there is much if any wear in the engine and the thinner oil will not hurt a thing. If it have been neglected and driven really hard, then it might be an issue.

On another dealer/oil note, my dealer said that Chrysler says for them to use Pennzoil as a substitute for Mopar oil while is is unavailable. I have them do mine because I get the coupons in my email from Dodge. Oil and filter change $18.95 plus the extra oil fot the Hemi, then I got a discount book when I bought the truck so for under $25 I get my oil and filter changed by the dealer and they top off my washer fluid and stuff as well.
No lifetime powertrain warranty issues since they did the changes
