Default Excessive Engine Noise

Hello All,

I'm trying to find out what is going on with my 06 Ram Lar. Hemi and can seem to find anyone else with the problem and the all the dealer-shops I bring it to are deaf.

When I first start my truck (length of time-between-running varies from minutes to days), or I've been driving slowly on country roads, my engine sounds very noisy (noise sounds like excessive revolutions, or very large fans).

The noise increases with acceleration but only to a maximum level. For example, if I keep the acceleration constantly at the top of the Tachometer, the excessive noise maxes out at around 4/5 RPMs but does not increase as RPMs raise above 5 RPMs. As long as I hold the RPMs at or above 5 RPMs, the excessive noise finally tappers off and goes away after 5 or 10 seconds (130+Km/h from start) and then the normal RPM noise becomes available. The exessive noise doesn't return again until hours, days, or weeks later.

I've started my truck and noticed the noise, popped the hood to check to see if its the extra cooling fan (stock), and its not spinning so I'm not sure what the noise could be.

Any help would be great!!

I have 108K on my truck, nearly all highway driven, have only hauled/towed safe weights, and have only hauled/towed <5 times. I've had the drive-line flushed, all fluids flushed and filled, and have had an inspection done on the truck, to no avail!!

Thanks everyone,
Lance

Sounds to me like the thermostatically controlled fan clutch. They make the same noise at startup and when going slow, the engine warms up and the fan kicks in harder to pull more air through the radiator.

The smaller fan you see on the driver side is for the A/C condenser.

Thanks for the reply. The small fan is not rotating at the time that this is happening; and the excessive noise does not appear, or go away, as the vehicle warms up, but rather only when I push and hold the RPMs above 5000.

PS. this happens in the summer (18 to 30 C) and winter (5 to -35 C)

I know the cooling fan is louder than I expected on my 05. Shortly after I bought it, we thought the A/C condenser fan was kicking in it was so loud, but no it was just the fan. Not sure you are hearing the same thing I was, but that was my experience.

It's the clutch fan. Always noisy for a bit on cold start-ups and whenever the engine requires more cooling.
