Default FOG Light Dealer Activation ??

After researching and reading threads, I have looked under the vehicle to find that my 2008 Ram 1500 ST Model was wired for fog lights. If I buy the factory kit on ebay, will I still have to take it to the dealer to activate it. I saw that there is a plug under the dash which I am guessing would be for the new switch. I hear stories that I will not have to activate it, but dont know if it will work with High Beams.

It's a crap shoot whether it will work or not without being activated. Used to be I thought if the hook ups were there, you didn't and if they weren't you did. But I've read posts by some with all the hook-ups who still had to go have the Star Scan hooked up to enable it.

Regardless, they will NOT work with the high beams, and although the dealer can make it do so, as a rule they WILL NOT. However, there is a DIY on running a splice wire to make it work, should be in the FAQ section...

it's luck of the draw, some people had too others didn't. i didn't have to, and mine stay on with the high beams. not sure of the 08's but my switch replaced the old one, for fog lights just have to push in on the light switch.

I'm pretty sure that on '06+, you cannot do the jumper wire as it's all computer controlled. But yes, the fogs can be set to work on both high and low beam. It took me going to several stealerships before I found a tech that would try it. He didn't even know it could be done, but figured it out in about 5 minutes. If I remember correctly, he first disabled the fogs on my '06, then re-enabled them for export to a foreign country. Then Bingo! I have fogs whenever I want them. It was so easy, he wasn't even going to charge me, but I gave him $20 anyway. Not all dealer techs are idiot jerks (just most of them).

Or you can bypass dodge's BS and just hard wire it yourself to an independent switch. I know it's not as pretty but it will save you from getting your bum fisted at the stealership and you can run the fogs with the highbeams on.

i don't see why you can't hard wire them, and claw the reason way they go off with brights is the law says all factory fog lights must shut off when the brights are turned on. but for out of country they go by their laws so they stay on with brights.

Maybe the laws are different where you're from, but here in CO and many other states, it is in fact legal to have fogs and high beams on together. The law just states that you cannot have more than 4 elements or bulbs on at a time. There are many instances, especially where I live, where it's very helpful to have fogs and highbeams on rural roads to help avoid hitting a 900 pound bull elk or something.

I was always under the impression that you would have to take it to the dealer. I have an 08 Im about to put them on in the next week, as soon as they arrive. I guess I'll find out on mine.

I have an 2008 Ram ST.
I bought the factory fog light kit and installed it myself. It comes with a new light switch. Everything plugs right in. You have to get them turned on by the dealer. Mine stay on with the high beams because the dealer checked the export option on the programmer. It is aginst the law to have them on with the high beams but it is nice on country roads.
As an added bonus, there is a little fog light indicator that lights up on your dash after you get them activiated. It cost me around $20.00 at the dealer. Some might do it for free if you ask nice. You might get lucky and your truck might already be programmed so the trip to the dealer is a moot point.

Good Luck.
