Default I think my ring and pinion are melted

Well after 3 installs and about 1200 miles on my new ring and pinion I think they melted today. I was driving up to my grandparents to visit family and they began getting louder about halfway up. So I pulled over and the differential cover was too hot to touch, so hot that when I put some snow on it the snow melted and evaporated in seconds. I smelled a burnt smell as soon as I got out of the truck. Once it finally cooled enough for me to check the oil it was silver, but the weird thing is that the oil didn't smell burnt. I'm so f**n sick of this I could drive the truck straight into a tree and then set it ablaze. I plan on taking it to the shop Monday, but it's like an hour from me, I'm wondering if it's safe to drive it like this though?

Call them first, they may want you to tow it.

Not bad luck, bad installers!!!

Sorry to hear about it, IMO the first shop did you in, but if they were shot, the second shop should have seen it.
Hoping all goes well, but yeah, if you try to drive it there, you may end up losing the whole differential...

Thanks for your support guys, I plan on calling them on Monday to see what I should do. I had to drive it home which was about an hour and it didn't get any louder, but I stopped halfway and let it cool for like 1/2 hour. I'm guessing the gear oil broke down and was no longer able to properly lubricate and cool it. I'm pretty sure the ring and pinion are shot, maybe all the bearings too, I'm hoping to salvage the DTT as it's pretty much brand new. I'm interested to hear what the shop is gonna say and whether I'll have to fight w/ them about warrantying it. They never gave me an impression that it would do this, all they said is that it may still whine after they set it up b/c there was more backlash variance than there should be on the ring gear. For now I've got to wait until Monday.

To me they didn't set it right, shouldn't it be on the shop?

Yeah, normally it would, but if you've been up on this, he's on shop number 2, and I'd be shocked if shop #2 didn't throw the blame on shop #1 for the original install.
Unfortunately, this is what happens when you choose the wrong shop for a gear install. It happens, fortunately not as often as it used to as more and more guys are doing gear upgrades and more shops out there are starting to specialize in it.
I feel for you, chambers, but you're not the first one whose had a very bad experience on a gear install. I'm afraid it looks like you're going to have to get another set of gears and an install kit at best, hopefully the gear maker will honor a warranty, but obviously this is NOT a defective set of gears but rather a **** poor install.
Keep us posted, and again, good luck with this. In the end, with a properly installed set of 4.56's you'll be a happy camper again.
AND DO NOT FORGET TO BREAK THEM IN CORRECTLY!!!

This is why I told you to pay for THEIR bearings. If you buy THER stuff, they have no leg to stand on when things fail. If you have a reciept they are fully responsible for it.
If the 2nd installer blame the original installer....Shame on them because that is why the 2nd installer was even touching your truck to begin with...To fix the problem at hand!
If there was ANY indication that the differential was going to fail, they should have not accepted any form of payment or let you leave..Period..IMO, unless they specifically stated otherwise.

1st shop will blame the 2nd so your out of luck there. Stik with handling and dealing with only the 2nd shop.

Gear whine=improper install..nothing else.
Gears aren't just "common" for whining. They are common for being installed improperly because guys think they know what they are doing and/or rush and do things incorrect.
My guess is they will say they will warranty the labor and not the parts that weren't purchased from them. i would not accept this as their install possibly broke other things.

Good luck and keep us posted.
