Does your loud "tick" only happen when you first start the truck (collapsed) lifter or after its been idling? A lot of 5.7 hemi's have a dull sounding "tick", a louder tapping sound upon start up might be a weak lifter, i had to have dodge replace all 16 lifter at about 16000 miles due to a weak lifter that could not be isolated. From what i understand is that these hemi's, due to valvetrain geometry have a bit of extra clearance between the valve stem and guide so the valve doesnt bind at operating temp, causing and audible tick at or off idle.

If you think that's the case, then throw a quart of marvel Mystery oil in the crankcase. Run it for an oil change and see if it clears up. just don't overfill the oil. You would replace a qt of oil with Marvel Mystery oil. in case you weren't sure.

Or even substitute 1 qt of oil for 1 qt of automatic trans fluid. Very high detergent and if it is a sludge issue, it will help clean it out.

I haven't thought of asking about the hemi-tick here because I've gotten so used to mine. Has done it at idle since I bought the truck new. Service manager told me it was normal for the hemi so I went with it. No motor issues - 65k miles.
