Default wiring problem

mounted my hellas a month ago and finally had a chance to wire them up today. it didnt go so well. i decided to wire them directly with 14 wire and a 30 amp switch, but as soon as i got done wiring and flipped them on the wire started smoking and melted, not just part of it but all the wiring melted. dont know what i didnt do right? had the wires hooked up right, lights were grounded to the frame. any help would be great!

Obviously something shorted, How did you have everything wired? Any relay or just battery to switch to lights and the other side of the lights to ground?

Yeah, thats right. You dont need the ground unless you want the light in the seitch to come on. With one set of the lights wires going to the load side of the switch, you have the other set going to chassis ground right?

Throw a fuse in there first so you dont melt wire next time.. I cant remember how to figure out what fuse to use though, first time i wired up ext. lights I didnt put a high enough amp fuse and after having the lights on for 30 mins straigth it would always pop for some reason..
