Tunners set on economy.
My truck has become a pig snorting gas hogging fart smelling dog.
I will be changing out the plugs, cleaning out the tbi and all the small mainatance stuff.
My question, How soon do you recover the cost of the tunner when your setting is not on a performance tune but economy tune?
I can buy a lot of flue for 300.00+ bucks and my driving habbits are not NASCAR inspired.

Ain't no mod will recoup it's cost in fuel savings in any realistic amount of time except for maybe an efan. A lot of great reasons to buy a tuner, but solely for mpg gains ain't one of 'em. I don't care what tune you install...

Thank you!!
My truck is not what I would say is a performance machine, the 6sp manual is geared for tourque and the 373 lt slip gives me ok highway mpg and the hemi has lots of power, in a nut shell I own a work truck thats stuck with city drving..
I have true daul ex and now finding with age and miles driven, my truck aint what it used to be with mileage, I know the plugs and basic maintance items are due and I want to get back, or get better milage numbers to when My truck was new.
86,000 Km to date, plugs have been changed once, diff fluids, transfer case, engine oil changed, all ways run mid grage ( ya winter gas is here ) 60 psi in the tires, air filter is new.
My trucks used to avarge 20 MPG highway, now I'm on the high 12 mpg numbers with higway/city combined.

I agree with the tuner not exactly payin for itself as most mods don't. I can't say anything though especially because if I put the performance tune on mine with a superchips I would drive even more Nascar inspired than what I do already.
Also your mpg losses aren't just because of vehicle age. It's been discussed before that the newer gas has the E10 (10% ethanol I believe) which gives less mileage because it doesn't burn as efficiently.

I am seeing the same results as Pyro, better MPG's with the performance tune over the 87 tune.

Yeah, I tested this extensively right after I got my SC. I mean right down to the cost per gallon of gas figured into the equation to come up with a cost per mile driven. Even with the economy tune and using .30 cents per gallon cheaper 87 octane, the cost per mile was still better with the performance tune and 93 octane gas. Was fairly close as I remember, within about 2 cents per mile driven. But you factor the performance tunes inherent benefits over the economy tune also, and it ain't even close. Run the Performance Tune every time, unless you plan to tow...
With my Edge, set to economy I seen an improvement in MPG, and the truck did run much better than when using 87 octane on a stock tune.
Performance tune and 93 octane netted me a slightly better MPG, but definitely not enough to compensate for the extra .35-.55 on the gallon.
When I had the Superchips, I didn't see any improvement with economy tune, just the fact that the truck performed better with the 87 octane than it did with stock tune.
Performance tune with Superchips and 93 octane seen an increase of maybe 2 MPG's, but with my figures, you were still losing $$ using 93 over 87...
All of my local gas stations charge anywhere from $0.35 - $0.55 more for 93 octane..
So a rough estimate:
93 octane Gas @ $2.75 x 25 gallons = $68.75
87 octane Gas @ $2.40 x 25 gallons = $60
17 MPG's x 25 gallons = 425 miles / $68.75 = $0.17 per mile
15 MPG's x 25 gallons = 375 miles / $60 = $0.16 per mile
Again, that's just with the Superchips, my Edge Evolution gave me about a 1 - 1.5 MPG gain with economy & 87 vs Stock & 89
