Countdown begins: A long drive in 6 months
Personally, I would. Weight Distribution hitches are worth the money on any large somewhat heavy loads. It adds to the stability and towing control. Cross Country and using a 1500 to pull 6500 to 7500lbs (or more possibly), I'd advise it hands down.
so, should i use this instead of rear air ride air bags, or should i use both.
Also, check your tire load limit and max psi for that load limit.
When hauling your entire life/belongings and family across the country, can never take too many precautions.
BTW - Thank you for your service!
Yeah, I agree with mmstar23 & SMKNRAM, run/add both. The airbags will help with the extra weight on the suspension and level the truck out. The WD hitch will make sure you have proper tongue weight (if attached properly, go to an RV place and have them explain/show you how to rig them up, worth it) helping with avoiding a bouncy rear end, but they will also help with trailer sway. While not as big of a wind sail as say a travel trailer, a vehicle on a trailer comes close and with a high center of gravity.

these guys are definitely correct as far as BEST setup would be both, but incorrect in saying the bags first, then the WDH. the WDH if tuned correctly will eliminate the sag by spreading the load in the thirds (front/rear truck axles and trailer). The WDH will not protect against sway, unless you get one with a swaybar setup. In my research i found the Equal-i-zer is the best WDH/sway control on the market. I did not use air bags, only the Equal-i-zer and towed a 7000lb 16ft cargo trailer from Vandenberg afb, ca to here in minot, nd (2400 miles) with ZERO issues...towed like a dream.
So in summary, go with the WDH for sure, and bags are an option, but not entirely necessary.

My wife's Liberty came to about the same weight. I towed it from TX to CT. once you get the bias on the brake controller dialed in, you'll be fine. Gas mileage will suck ALOT, as will your ability to go up mountains with a mostly stock engine (you won't be going regular highway speeds). But the truck will handle it just fine.
i dont know... i had no problems towing my 7k+ cargo trailer at 75mph through the mountains of utah and i dont have a whole lot more goin for me than he does (just LT headers, SC 91 tune, 4.56 gears offset by 35" tires)
