Here is a good explanation:

the radar detectors detect radar signal or laser, not the presence of a police car or an officer. if the radar unit is on hold, it is not broadcasting a signal, and therefore your radar detector wont go off. by time that signal hits your car and your radar detector, the radar unit has already displayed your speed to the officer. as you drive by the officer hits the hold switch sending out the radar signal, the radar unit then displays your speed, then the officer hits the hold button again and the signal stops. my in car radar unit can pick up a vehicle further out than i can see them on a strait road in the dark, from the front or rear.
I was with an officer doing radar one day and we were checking speeds of people AT LEAST 1-2 miles down the highway. Quite a piece of technology and it's only getting improved.

I definelty think that was the case...but your knowledge does make sense and looks like it probably will save me $$$

Has that ever been the deciding factor whether or not they get a citation for you? (sorry im not tryin to put you on the spot or anything, just curious)

I don't own one to be honest, but know people who do. I have just talked with officers about it before and learned how it all works. I also read it online just like that forum that I posted. But yes, use that money for mod money . I hear people who have them say they are going to hide the detector if they ever get pulled over before the officer gets to the window. I simply replied back to them that they will be starting down the business end of a glock if they start moving around like that

haha, yea the braking doesn't work unless the cop doesn't care or isn't paying attention. Most run instant on radar which means they got your speed by the time the thing beeps. I've got a cobra something or other that I got for free off craigslist. It goes off a lot, never know if its a cop or automatic door, but I like it a lot for the emergency vehicle warning. It goes off whenever an ambulance or firetruck is running it's redlight system so thats nice that I can look to get out of the way before I get stuck. Also, only like 15% of cop cars out there are equipped for radar/laser so many times you'll be driving by a cop and it'll never go off, but you don't know if it's because he is running instant on or doesn't have radar at all.

But i do know one thing that for sure will work instead of a radar detector...(although it is out lawed in most states and will get you hauled off to jail/ or a fat ticket)
ill give you a hint...they are bigger than radar detectors and they prevent the cop from even being able to detect you in the first place!

Never had a ticket with the Valentine. They help if someone is speeding in front of you somewhere because they get clocked and you have enough time to slow down. If your the only one speeding well your SOL then..

last year I was anyoed with a speeding ticket and was trying to figure out a way to jam radar, laser radar. Radar jammers are out thier.

I had this ideal that your garage door opener may be able to bounce a radar signal off your car. AS for the tech stuff I'm out of my world to think this would work, but radar is only good for a cop when the signal bounces back to him/her,

Also radar dectors pick up infered signals of automatic doors at shopping malls

haha if a detector pisses off a cop imagine what he would do if he found one of those things hidden in your grill!
