Cold Air Intake - My style - with Pix
I was going to wait until I had the guys in my metal shop make a Stainless Steel air collector/bracket but this Intake is working so well as is I want to show it off now.
I purchased the K&N RC-3690 from a Performance Parts carrier online ($50.00 including shipping)
I purchased the 4" sweeping elbow, rubber connection, ABS cement and straps from Lowes ($10.00)
I already had the 4" ABS straight pipe (About $5.00 worth)
The inside diameter of the 4" pipe happens to be 3.5" - exactly what I needed. I've read in this forum ( and it from studies in aerodynamics for aircraft in college) that airflow turbulence is to be avoided. So my design incorporates the sweeping 90 degree elbow and ABS tubing directly to the intake opening. I tried using the metal covered connection as shown in the first picture but the intake opening is slightly oval and I couldn't force it on. The thick rubber connector works great. I put a little WD40 on it to help it on. The two straight sections are 11" out of the intake and 8" to the filter. The K&N Filter clamps directly on the pipe. The white strap is temporary until I have the SS bracket built.
I have kept accurate tabs of gas mileage over the two years and 50,000 miles I have driven. I have consistently gotten 14.9 MPG over the last two years. It appears that this intake may increase mileage by about 1 MPG - I'll know better in another 10,000 miles.
What do you think?
2003 Hemi Ram Quad SLT with tow & 4x4 packages
Added Aluminum steps, aluminum billet grille, 34 gallon fuel tank, cold air intake w/ K&N filter
Future plans: cat back duel exhaust

BTW - forgot to mention what I have not heard any others saying.
To get the Big K&N Filter in, I had to completely remove the bracket for the standard air filter. After messing around for 1/2 an hour trying to reach up under with the 1/2" wrench, I figured out I could remove the wheel well with only a few screws and some elbow grease (that's hard work to you guys under 35 years old).
I 'll add the two screws for the top middle of the wheel well plastic when I put in the SS bracket.
Here's a picture of how tight the air filter filts.

BlackAcid, that place is way overpriced. I don't think I've ever seen 4" DWV that expensive. Although I prefer HD to Lowe's, it sounds like you ought to go elsewhere. It looked like Jeff17 used ABS as DWV is white and ABS is black. Perhaps you should get some DWV and paint it the color of the truck. Now that would be SWEET for a home made deal.

what is DWV?. white pvc?
well i was thinking of a diffrent approach.. i want the black tubing because of what i have in my mind right now.. i thinkim going to head over to ace hard ware and have a look. if not i'll just go to Wayatt, its like a hard ware store for tubing, they got everything and my dad has an account there so woot!
hey im also curious.. where did you connect the air hose that reaches across the engine into the stock airbox?
