Morning Knocks
Hey guys,I have an 2006 Ram 5.7 hemi with 47k on it. I start it in morning and it starts knocking and revs at 1100 rpm. After a few minutes it goes away after it warms up and the rpm idles normal. If I try to drive it during the knocking it sputters and eventually flattens out. I notice if I turn the key off and then back on most of the time the knock goes away. It also pulls a p0306 code(#6 misfire). I did change the plugs and no difference.Any ideas
What would cause the vaslve to stick open when the motor is cold? I have a2006 with 75K on it running like crap & throwing P304 code. Already replaced the plugs, coil, EGR, PCV a& cleaned the throttle body myself. Now its in the shop as I've run out of ideas and I'm beign told it probably needs new lifters.
Carbon build-up and sludgy oil can cause sticking lifters and valves.
i would throw a bottle of Lucas fuel injector lube in your gas tank and a qt of marvel mystery oil in your engine and drivie it for a few hundred miles and then change out your oil.
If it's really bad, you could pour 1/2 bottle of seafoam in your engine, run it for 15-20minutes and then do an oil change. I'm partial to the Mystery oil as i have used the stuff for over 10yrs with no ill effects only excellent benefits and you can run mystery oil in place of regular oil regularly. can't say as much with seafoam, plus Mystery oil coats and protects while seafoam is more of a petroleum substance like gasoline. While the company says no issues for bearings, i would shy away from the stuff as it doesn't provide any lubrication when i poured it between 2 metal surfaces and rubbed them together, certainly nothing like marvel mystery stuff.

Keep in mind all the oil also drains back down in the bottom of the block when the engine is sitting for a long time such as over night. But within a second of starting the engine the oil pump should have oil going through the engine
My truck has a very brief knock/rattle for a split second at start up that is a little unnerving. I have always been a Ford guy and this is my first Dodge. It doesn't do it in unless it is below zero. I run synthetic with a bottle of Lucas in there and it is the same. This a normal Hemi thing?

bigbluemega, are you running the lucas oil treatment? The stuff thats like thick as honey? Because if i recall correctly that stuff is not made for very cold temps. I imagine its like tar in below freezing temps which would very well account for your brief knock/rattle. During the winter months i wouldnt use the oil treatment.

i added the Lucas in with a fresh oil change of 5-20 Amsoil Synthetic thinking it would help. It is slightly better but not much. On my old Ford 5.4's (they are notorious for engine valve noise at start up) the Lucas was the only thing that would help. It is odd and the knock/rattle is very brief, less than a second, but, it didn't do it before the weather dropped below freezing. My first winter with a Dodge, maybe it is normal?
Small exhaust leaks are misdiagnosed all of the time as pinging or knocking noises from the engine, too. When the engine warms up, manifold seals back up and no more pinging. Just so you don't rule it out. Sounds like lack of oil in the valve train.
