I pulled on those pieces and pried and did all kinds of stuff trying to get them off. I think youre right, its a bigger deal than just popping them off. I painted a few interior pieces, it helps the look alot.

That yellow will look sick though

if you disconnect the battery for 30+ mins there is no chance for the airbag to go off, it has capacitors that will keep it charges for 20 mins or so.

Actually this is the warning plastered all over the service manual

WARNING: DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY STEERING WHEEL, STEERING COLUMN, SEAT BELT TENSIONER, SIDE AIRBAG, OR INSTRUMENT PANEL COMPONENT DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. DISCONNECT AND ISOLATE THE BATTERY NEGATIVE (GROUND) CABLE, THEN WAIT TWO MINUTES FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PERFORMING FURTHER DIAGNOSIS OR SERVICE. THIS IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO DISABLE THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. FAILURE TO TAKE THE PROPER PRECAUTIONS COULD RESULT IN ACCIDENTAL AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

being in emergency services, ive seen times where fire fighters have been working on a car for 20+ minutes with the batt disconnected and the airbag still goes off. capacitors are kinda finicky, and can have a mind of their own sometimes. i would be more worried about that thing blowing up and seriously injuring you more than the cost. so you made the right choice not to eff with it.
