Advice on replacing ball joints/tie rods
just had all 4 ball joints replaced and new steering rack and pinion. the guy charged me $225 cash. he even put on new pads @ no extra charge.
from what i saw while watching him. take the wheels off and the rotors. the top joints are easy cause theyre just bolt on with the A arm.
the bottoms will have to be cut out or air hammered out. in fact, most of the time spent will be breaking down/putting back together.

Damn I need to find a shop like that! I dont have a problem doing them myself (probably will end up) but at 225 i would do that in a heart beat! because everyone knows that for some reason nothing EVER goes perfect when doing things in the driveway like this. Plus idk about yall but when I get hot, work in cramped places, and something isnt working right I start getting mad and end up breaking something else
Well as for that link above, Im fairly certain I will be making my own UCA and LCA in the spring or summer. If I keep my current suspension or replace it with bags, the CA's will likely be replaced. Ive found a bender for the bar and the bushing already. Ive got a friend that owns his own welding company so all i have to do is get the material and get it shaped. I just cant afford 600-800 and up on CA's.
I am new to this group and am begging for some advice. My 2006 1500 has recently developed a nasty front end vibration. From what I'm hearing, the usual suspects appear to be either tie rod ends, or the lower ball joints. Since I have already replaced the tie rod ends (outers), I'm left with the ball joints. I'm told the lowers go more frequently than the uppers? Here's where I'm at.
I have the tools and ability to do the work myself, but this being my first Dodge, I'm not sure how to approach this. Do I need to remove the axle to the upper or lower ball joints? If so, what size socket do I need? Any hints or tips on the easiest or quickest way to approach this job? It sounds like I need to buy upper arms to get the joints? I'm looking for advice to get me started, and finish without too many surprises! Thanks in advance for any help.

I had my lower ball joints go completely out in a week and the uppers not to far behind, but the stuff is covered under warrenty I have an 04, but the dealer charged the warrenty company almost 2000.00 can you believe that ****, I am glad it was covered didn't feel like changing em in the driveway during highs of 20's. They did have to change the A arms for the uppers. Since dodge made it one peice OR SO THEY SAID, as long as I wasn't flipping the bill it was ok. The bitch about the whole thing was I dropped off the truck telling the service guy what was wrong, anyone who has spend a few days under a truck can tell when ball joints go bad. He calls me back says there is not one thing wrong, so I go back to the dealer tell him BS have the mechanic come out here, took the mechanic for a ride since he couldn't find anything. Low and behold backed up turned the wheel and pop! Worse then when I dropped it off before, come to find out the mechanic says he couldn't find anything on the rack so he took it upon himself to tighten up my step bars with an impact and stripped the bolts out, so when the body flexed the step bars popped and the ball joints popped. Then the mechanic agrees ya I guess we should change those out. Go to pick up the truck four days later because they did have them in stock, this gets better the service guy tells me there is nothing wrong with the uppers so we just changed the lowers. I said ok but the uppers are going out you can hear it. Didn't make out of the parking lot again and there was the lovely popping sound a ball joint makes. Back inside I go to have another go around, and with the mechanic again also, mechanic says huh I guess we should change the uppers. No **** sherlock holmes, so four more days go by then I get my truck back, I have great trust in my Dodge mechanic now. I think that will be the LAST TIME DAVIS-MOORE EVER SEES MY TRUCK.

Yea as Hoss stated, the ball joints going bad sound like nails on a chalkboard..not vibrating. And jmcclucky, there are many dumbasses out there that dont give a damn about your truck, they just want a paycheck, so once you find a good, honest mechanic (getting more rare these days) I would only go to him for your problems. Those dealerships only know what is on paper in front of them or what is in the manuel.
