Default Good deal?

So I found a guy near me that has a Auburn LSD new in the box with bearings and friction additive for a Chrysler 9.25". The guy said hes had it for a little while and there is some slight surface rust but he said it could be taken off easily with a brush. He said he wanted $150 which is a lot cheaper than retail but I just wanted to know if you guys thought it was worth going out and looking at it or should I pass because of the rust?

Well that's what I was wondering about. He said he's had it for a while. Maybe just in a damp environment? A good brushing and being soaked in gear oil for the rest of its life should stop the rust though right?

well if it really is new then it should be fine and just surface rust. Also for the price and if he's close, I'd say go have a look at it. It's rare to see a deal like that.

I'm just worried about the little internal pieces and if they're alright.

The slight surface rust is no biggie, BUT I'm willing to bet it's for the older 9.25" diffs. You cannot use an older 9.25" carrier in a new 9.25" rearend.
Get the part number to verify.

Save up some more money and get a real "anti-spin" diff. Get a LOCKER!! There's a reason why they call them "limited" slip diffs. They only work on a limited basis. Just when you need it off road, it doesn't work. I'm just waiting for mine to grenade and then do a re-gear with a detroit!

Good luck, and for the record, it is a good price; but you'd have to pay me to put in another LSD on anything I drive.

He gave me the part number and I looked it up on the Auburn website and it fits the newer models 1984-present. He said he bought it back in 2002/2003.

as said before, if it is surface rust I wouldnt worry about it but I cant imagine it being pitted. Sounds like a good deal to me. Ive got an Auburn and it has been great. ive never spun just one tire

Thats absolutely TERRIBLE advice for a daily street driver. strictly off road? sure a locker is the way to go. but it will chatter more than teeth in a north dakota winter on the street.

sounds like you've been burned by a crappy LSD...

Like weedahoe and every other member on here with Auburn, I've never had just one tire spin. It always locks up every time, very quickly
