Think we may have it kinda figured out. I'm not ruling out the rear end, but when I was saying it didn't do it when i revved it up, I actually meant that I can be driving on the highway and get it in the position when it whines the worst and throw it up into neutral and the whining will stop while moving, even while revving the engine. That leads me to believe it isnt the rear end because it is essentially turning the same speed as it was because I'm still moving the same speed. My friend who is a dodge guru rode with me this evening and he listened while I drove. We have pinpointed the noise to right under the driver side back seat. The only thing under there is a oblong box with a bunch of piping going into the tranny. There is a small canister that sits on top of it. Is this some type of vacuum pump for the tranny and could that be what is making the whining noise? That is the only thing that is around where we pinpointed the noise. We also think that maybe the filter in the tranny is stopped up and causing the vacuum box to have to work harder, hence causing the whine. Does this sound possible? Thx for all the responses.

It is probably your pinion bearings as several people have noted already. Mine does the exact same thing now and has since a bonehead mechanic overtightened the pinion nut when he changed the pinion seal. Mine will whine as long as I am on the gas and in gear. Let off the gas and she coasts quietly. I am on borrowed time since my pinion nut was overtightened over 5,000 miles ago. Waiting on the funds to get the 3:92's changed out for 4:56's. I can hear the whine over my Magnaflows and stereo. If you were low on fluid in the rear end, you probably have damaged the bearing.

 

My vote is the rear gears also.

I know this is an old post. But did anyone ever figure the problem. Mine is doing the same thing.
