Anyone here tow a 5th wheeler?
Hi, I have a question for those who tow a 5th wheeler and set their truck up to do so. I have a 2006 1500 MC 4x4. My problem is that the truck is too high! The king pin on the trailer is too low for the height of the hitch in the truck. It will tow it, but its at quite an incline. I would like to level it out more. The trailer suspension is rubber torsion, so to lift it I would have remove the suspension and add blocks and weld it all up. That could effect the trailer's center of gravity. I was also thinking of lowering the truck with drop shackles, but I see people bottom out with those. I'm assuming this would not be good with 1,000 pounds on the pin. Just curious what others have done if they have had this issue. Thanks
The pin can be adjusted but right now it as is high as it can go. That's also another option, to buy a king pin with the same extension out but less drop. They are very pricey though. I'm thinking to possibly drop the rear of the truck 3" if it won't compromise towing and to get larger tires for the trailer. Hoping for a better option though.
I'd sell the pin box you have and use the funds for the one that gives you the correct height. Or have the existing one adapted by a trailer shop.

Well currently the rear sits about 3" higher than the front with no load on the pin. So I would assume since many raise the front to level the truck, there should be no harm in lowering the rear to level out. But I've heard a few say they bottom out when the lower the rear, that would not be good with 5th wheel hooked up.

You talking about a 5th wheel RV or just a trailer? If it's an RV, unless it's a very light model relative to 5th wheels, your truck is probably not rated high enough in the right areas to even be towing it to begin with. I looked into trading my travel trailer in on a 5th wheel a couple of years ago but didn't want to trade up my truck to a heavy duty. By all accounts from the research I did, the math just didn't work given the amount of weight that would be on the rear axle and then adding in passenger and cargo weight, etc. Make sure you do the math for whatever it is you are towing and whatever you are towing it with.
