Intro and 2002 4.7 stuff...
Hi guys,
I've been a lurker for a while now, but it's time to come out of my shell and give props to you all. I've been reading this forum on and off for about a year or so. I had a 2002 reg-cab, long-box, 4x4 with a 5.9 magnum that was stolen last October. I was planing all kinds of mods, but someone else had another agenda. The replacement truck is another 2002, but it's a Quad-cab, short-box, 4x4 with a 4.7 engine. It came with a CAI from Mac Performance and a Magnaflow dual outlet exhaust. It also has had the rad done, new power steering pump, new AC compressor and a new tranny pan that rusted out shortly after the thirty-day used car warranty ran out. All in all, a good truck that I am happy with as a replacement.
Lately the truck started runing weird, nothing serious, just not 100%. It stalled a few times coming down to an idle and at idle. It would also surge driving down the road at a steady speed similar to a plugged fuel filter or a mechanical fuel pump on its way out, but bad enough to cause issues with the tranny dropping out of lock-up or out of OD altogether. So, I stared searching the forum. Found lots of opinions and answers that lead me to the throttle body, TPS and IAC motor.
Yesterday was the day. I took off the old CAI and removed the throttle body. It was dirty but not plugged up at all. I removed the TPS and the IAC motor. The TPS looked to be an original piece as did the IAC. The IAC wasn't sealing as evidenced by the staining on the tip and seat areas.
I thoroughly cleaned the throttle body and replaced both the TPS and the IAC with new items from Ma Mopar and reinstalled the unit.
Next, I installed a new CAI from Volant I picked up from eBay. Lots of opinions on the forum regarding CAIs. My opinion is just that, opinion. I chose to go with the Volant because I like the fact that the filter is enclosed and protected from splashing and engine bay elements. I also like the location of the air intake behind the headlight. Next I installed a Jet Stream Scoop from Air Ram Performance as well a Power Wire that allowed me to move the air temperature sensor from the intake to the CAI tube. Lots of chages all at once, which I don't normally like to do.
The ***-In-Seat-Dyno felt some mild to modest improvments. Biggest improvement is at highway speeds The erratic idle is gone and steady at approx 600 rpms and the surge is gone at speed. The mileage won't get any better until I learn to keep my foot out of it, but I'm sure it will improve just from the better drivability feel it has now. Everything is nice and smooth with no eratta to speak of... rather zenlike!
Then I mash it!
I would also like to say a special thanks to Nick at AIR Ram Performance. Solid vendor and service. This guy has a real passion for our trucks! A bit of a rarity these days.

So, I picked my new/old Superchips tuner today from the Post Office. I scored it from eBay for $199. I got a little freaked out when I opened it up and it said it was for a 04/07 Hemi
But then I figured that the updates would save the day and they did. I havent had to much of a chance to play with it, but it's worth just for some of the minor adjustments and the ability to read codes! Looking forward to fine tunin'!
"Guttah" grille is next on the agenda!
Pics coming soon....
