pro comp xtreme terrain a/t or mickey tompson atz?
Fixing to get tires. Im getting a pretty good deal 305/55/20s. The pro comps are about 20 bucks more than the atz's. Just looking for some feed back on which one is better Pro-Comp xtreme terrain a/t or the mickey tompson atz?
Well, I'm biased because I'm a huge Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek fan...
But I have a buddy with a set of ATZs on his Z71 with over 80k miles on them and they are probably good for about 15k more.
I know some guys will swear otherwise, but a few years back like half the guys in my hunting club jumped on the Pro Comp tire bandwagon and 90% of them swore they would never get another set. I know a guy put a set of the Mud Terrains on his Wrangler and they were bald at 18k miles!
Now this was before the "Xtreme" series came out when they were either M/Ts or A/Ts, but I've never like Pro Comp tires.
The Mickey Thompson MTXs (the tire that the ATZ basically replaced) that were on my 2nd Gen had 68k on them when I sold the truck and they were still in very good shape and my Dick Cepek (sister company to Mickey Thompson) FCIIs have almost 30k on them now and a few guys on here can attest that they still have 90%+ tread on them...
Bear can attest to the ATZs, he just lifted his truck higher and wants to replace his 33" ATZs with 35" tires, but the damn things just will not wear on him to the point that he can justify a switch...

Actually rocket, I'm shocked the OP is finding the ATZs cheaper than the Pro Comps. Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek tires are among the most expensive out there.
But I look at it thisaway, I originally switched to my first set of Mickey Thompsons close to 15 years ago because I was having nothing but problems out of Goodyear Wranglers and BFG's. Fast, uneven wear and cupping issues from hell. I HAVE NEVER had an issue with a MT or Cepek tire, coupled with the fact that I get DOUBLE the life out of them.
So even if I am paying a third more for these tires, I am getting great performance and with the wear I get out of them, I am saving money in the long run...
Yeah, what Hammer said, I have had the Mickey Thompsons ATZ's and these damn things won't were out! I'm gonna guess I got at least 30k on these tires and I bet there is 75-80% tread left if not a little more. Now I rotate mine every 6k religiously so that plays a big part but when I do get my 35's they gonna for sho be Mickeys.

Your decision is easy my friend. I have the X-terrains and they're absolutely horrible. they've been on the truck less than 30k mi and they need replaced. Traction off road is decent, but not what I'd like out of a M/T.
I know you're looking at the A/T version of my M/T, but I cant imagine they'd be that much better. Hammer is right, Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek are among the best out there. They are expensive usually, so if you found a good deal, dont pass on it

See i dont know much about the xtreme terrians, and i only know of a few people with the atz's because of how expensive they are.
Does any body who what it will look like with 305/55s on stock rims with 1/4 inch wheel spacers.
I should have some pics up sometime later this week, to let yall know how it goes.

I dunno, but if it was me, I'd get some 17s with a good 4.5 backspace and save a TON on 17" ATZs. 20s have the look, but 17s have the performance on a 4x4. The backspacing would make it not necessary to need spacers.
On pavement, they would be about equal, but off-road it's all about sidewall flex and 20s just don't have enough sidewall unless you are talking 37s on 20s.
I'd bet you could get some decent Mickey Thompson Classic II or Cepek DC1s in 17" and a set of 17" ATZs for less than the 20" ATZs and spacers...

I had pro comp all terrains on my truck for about 6 months and i have just now switched to toyos, however, i have come to this conclusion:
Pro comps are over priced peices of doggy poo!!! My mickey T baja claws rode better and had better wear than these and i never even rotated them lol.
Unless its a cheap car or somethin, dont cheap out on tires dude!
