i was thinking last night, what about a cone filter right on the TB. you might need a slight bend to get it to fit, maybe 1 section of PVC. but straight in. less restriction, but most likely hotter air since its right ontop of engine. Would you be worried about the suction of the engine being to great, and wanting to pull the filter into the TB.

This is just speculation.... but what do you think gains are with no filter at all (wouldnt try it) ive seen alot of drag cars, remove there filters for the 1/4mi. how much are they really gaining? If K&N says they get est 10HP with there set up, maybe get 20 with no filters?

Of course you do not EVER want to run your truck without a filter. I have seen the filter put right on the tb. Yes, you will get more heat than if you run it where most everyone else does. That being said, that's the reason it's called a CAI and not an hot air intake. The motor much prefer's cold air. You may even lose hp with that hot of air being pulled in.

Used 3" pipe and made my own shield with stainless sheet metal, i am going to shave some metal off the botom the shield and get a 6 inch 3" pvc pipe and move it down to be a true cold air intake

Nice job Hoss! and it only took how many PM's???

Be careful how low you stick that filter, if you take that 4x4 off road, you could end up sucking water into that thing.

I wonder just how effective going with 4" pipe actually is? I know with an exhaust if you go too big on the pipe, you actually lose air flow. I know with the Hemi, 2 3/4 and 3" pipe is great, but you gradually start to actually lose performance at 3.5" and larger.

Think of it as water, you get more pressure and hence better flow through a thinner pipe than through one that is too wide. Of course there is just too thin too. I think with any thing else, there is a balancing act here.

As far as putting it right in front of the TB, I gotta agree with Johnny. You want the coolest air possible. I thought about a setup similar to Mopar78s because it would give me the use of the sidewall for the optional passenger side battery tray and the second battery I want to mount. But I hesitate to put the filter where it will undoubtedly be sucking much hotter air. Routing down into the wheel well as Hoss intends to do is GREAT for cooler air, but this old redneck spends too much time in the lowlands and swamps hog huntin' and fishin' to take that risk...

yeah CJ, I wasn't trying to criticize your setup, it actually looks KILLER! I was just kinda thinking aloud in the open forum. But I would love to be able to pull some CFM numbers and find that pipe size that is "just right"...

After reading these threads, sounds like DIY is the way to go. One question, was making the shield difficult? or fitting it?
