Default Rear axle housing/diff options?

My '06 1500 Laramie differential (Chrysler 9.25) exploded, blowing a whole in the housing. I want to replace with an Auburn or Detroit. What axle housings can I look for that would fit? The wrecking yards want a fortune for complete stock housing/axle assembly and I would be throwing away the diff anyway.

I need to keep the 5-bolt wheels and 3.92 ratio, my axle shafts are ok and would like to reuse them.

Any help appreciated,
F.R.

The Detroit TrueTrac seems to be the way to go for an everyday driver a couple guys on here do have an Auburn and they seem to like them as well but more have the Detroit.

If you go to Moe's you can get the TrueTrac and gears if you wanted to upgrade those as well for around $750 if I'm not mistaken.

while you are replacing, might as well upgrade the gears. a set of 4.10's or 4.56's will really wake your truck up. and since you have the diff all apart anyways, you might as well do it. but as said, the detroit, or the auburn are both excellent choices. your best bet is to just get another chrysler 9.25 rear, once that stock LSD is out of them, they are pretty solid.

U should check out getting the same 9.25 with an open diff and convert it to an auto locking diff from richmond gear which goes for 350-400 and a open diff rear has to be cheaper.

Thanks, flwalks, except I'm in the exact opposite corner of the country, western Washington, I'll check freight costs it might be worth it since it's such low miles, except I really wanted to get rid of the stock LSD, I might reconsider.

dont reconsider. you need to get rid of that stock lsd -- its the reason your rear axle exploded anyway. by the way, your gears are shot too so you'll need to replace them as well... may as well upgrade to 4.10 or 4.56 like stated earlier.

As far as whos better, Detroit trutrac or Auburn? Its an even split. I thought there were more with the Auburn. The Auburn is about $100 cheaper and locks up faster. Granted it uses clutch packs, but those clutches will long outlast your truck. not sure what the big obsession is with trutrac besides it costs more

I have the DTT and like it. Can't compare it to the Auburn as not having run one. Beside the name recognition and it being a cone style I believe one advantage is you can run 4:56 and higher ratio's without modifying anything. As for lockup, I can make a turn and with a touch of gas it is locked up. Launching, it appears to lockup immediately. It's an open choice.

Your right AF_ I'm not going to reconsider, I'm so disgusted with that Chrysler LSD but finding an empty housing is my problem. The wrecking yards don't want to sell just the housings. Someone in an earlier post, I'm having trouble finding again, mentioned some optional older (cheaper) 9.25 housings that would fit except for some minor differences that I might be able to live with or adapt since I'm rebuilding the whole thing anyway, including driveline. I'm waiting for a reply from that craigslist axle mentioned earlier to see if he'd ship it. I could afford that and throw away the stock diff.

I have an Auburn and like mine. I replaced my stock LSD also not because I was having bigissues from it but because I had a few small ones and didnt want them to grow into bigger ones.
