I've got a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L 2wd that I use to pull my 26ft camper with. I did some searching and I came up empty handed. Is there anyway to put a switch on your converter to where you can manually unlock and lock it? I know it can be done on some Chevy transmissions but I didn't know if it was possible with my truck.

If i remember right the 46re is an automatic lockup, it goes into lockup once you go into 4th gear with no heavy load. I don't think there is a way. The 42re is that way at least.

 

Thats what I'm wanting to bypass is the auto lockup.

When I'm in OD going around 60 mph my RPM's are at 1,400-1,500 with the converter locked up. I'm wanting to make it to where the tranny doesn't tell the converter to lockup so it'll get more RPM's in OD to keep it from downshifting as much.

 

an unlocked converter on the highway is asking for a tremendous heat buildup. ESPECIALLY if you're pulling a load. Just let the tranny do its thing. These trannys might be inefficient, but they know more about what they're doing than you do (no offense intended).

 

I used to have a B&M Lockup Kit on my 200r4 trans in my Olds 442. I know this is a long ways away from a 545rfe but maybe you can check with companies like them for some input

 

Thats my problem, I'm only finding them for the 200r4 and the 700r4. It may not be possible.

 

you can tap the brake to lock up the tq conv. maybe somehow run a switch to the brake switch that locks up the converter...?

you might be looking at a new tq converter with a different stall...

 

Man, I can't but think that is not a good idea. If the load is light let it lock up as it will reduce heat. But I understand what you are saying and I believe what you really need is gears. That will make it drive the way you want it to and not be shifting all the time.
