Default Chrome Wheels Are Pitting

Hey guys, I've searched around the site but haven't been able to find much information on this topic. I can't imagine I'm the only guy who has had bad luck with his chrome wheels so I'm going to start this thread to see what kind of info is out there.

I've got American Racing chrome wheels that are about 20 months old and the suckers are pitting. Is there anything that can be done to remove the pitting or am I just S.O.L.? I'm thinking about having them re-chromed vs. buying new wheels if I can't remove the pitting, but I'm not sure how cost effective that is. Anyone have any experience in getting wheels re-chromed?

Thanks everyone!

well you should have pollished and waxed them from the get go . you wouldnt be in this pickle .

since you didnt do step one , now you must save them with elbow greese and good polish to take out the pits , then a good wax job .

By the way ramhunter, step one, as you put it was done but thanks for stating the obvious.

Anyone else have any advice on how to actually get rid of the pitting? I'm not looking for tips to prevent the pitting as it has already happened....I need advice on how to get rid of it.

Thanks!

I would think when you say pitting you mean eating into the metal and literally pits. If thats the case then the damage is already done and the most you can do it try to stop it from getting worse. I constantly clean and wax my rims.

Wow silverbullet, maybe you and ramhunter9 should get together sometime to have a pecker measuring contest as you both seem to know it all! Any jacka$$ can use Google, I've done that extensively along with searching this site. I'm looking for input from people who have actually had experience with this particular issue. Maybe you should sit back and don't bother responding to a post you have no experience with. Just a thought.......

Man that "let me google that for you" is going to get people killed. But your SOL with the pits.... Your best bet is powdercoating the rims or re-chroming them.... Black is the new chrome or any color...

Calm down there big guy. They are just stating that if you want Chrome wheels, you need to take care of them. You had the rims for 20 months meaning you just went through a winter. I am assuming that you didn't polish or wax them once in those 3-4 months...hence your problem.

Alright, onto what you are asking.

Yes, I have has this issue on multiple sets of rims. On my 2003, I had 2 sets of Chrome rims replaced under warranty because of the lip pitting.

Now, as was asked earlier, which you did not answer, are your rims pitted, or do you have junk on the rims that look like pitting. Those are two totally different things.

Again, I have had both, so I will do my best to help you.

The factory rim lips were infact pitting. Not much you can do about that, as mentioned earlier (even though you flamed him)...just keep it from speading (as mentioned earlier).

Now, my Moto Metal rims "pitted" the first winter. This is "pitting" that isn't real pitting. There were stones/asphault/gunk/debris on the rims that looked like pitting. With a bit of elbow grease, your finger nail, lots of rags, lots of bug and tar remover and a lot of chrome polish, you will get your rims back to new.

The second winter of my Moto Metal rims, I became lazy and was not cleaning the truck as often as I should have. Real pitting occured this time as well as the "pitting." As stated earlier, all you can really do is clean them up and keep them clean so it does not get worse.

I hope this helps and I didn't give you information you can find on google...because I am sure people with "real life experiences" don't post articles on google, say in a corvette forum or F150 forum. Just sayin'

Relax and welcome to the community.

If you continue on the road you are on, no one will help you in the future if you bash their responses to you.

You have to admit, you became laxed with your truck and the rims "pitted" or pitted. It is what it is. Just keep on top of it now.

Cheers,
J
