Default Just a couple of questions

AF Hemi:
37's will rub without an aftermarket wheel and correct backspacing. The tire is too wide to fit the stock rim

Could I put 35x12.5 Toyo Open Country MT's on the stock 17" rims or will I need to buy new rims no matter what? What bolt pattern does my truck have for the Rims?

Can anyone recommend a suspension lift kit that will fit on my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab Laramie 5.7L Hemi 4x4? I will need a kit that canfit at least 35's but I kinda want to go more for 37's

AF Hemi:
Go with Superchips. You'll have amazing trans support that DSP just doesnt offer yet. Bullydog is a diesel tuner that tried to make money in gassers -- they suck.

Can anyone recommend a Superchips .. chip to me? Model number? or i there only one that will work with my truck? I'm gonna look into this after I post...

Another thing I read was that because of the bigger tires... they will be harder for my truck to turn... so getting different gears would be a good idea. 4.56's were recommended to someone else. Can I put 4.56's on my 1500 Mega Cab? It is a 4x4 5.7L Hemi. This means I need to get two sets correct? one for the rear and one for the front... I have seen online at Moe's Performance that there is one package that has a 9.25" rear axle and 8" front axle. Is this what my truck has? I have done alot of looking but can't find anything to say what my truck has... One of the main reasons I started this thread

AF Hemi:
Are you sure you have the 9.25" rear? If so, yes 4.56 will work. I thought all megas had the bigger pumpkins

I don't know what size my truck has.. Does anyone know? Haven't been able to find any info on it..

AF Hemi:
Go with Auburn. Its $100 less and locks up faster. People will say "but it has clutch packs so it'll wear out" blah blah blah. I've never heard of anyone needing to replace the clutch packs even after 100k miles

So for the Auburn LSD, will I NEED this? Like a must have if I up the gears? Perhaps this is something I could do at a later date? I don't really know anything about the LSD's so... Any guideance or help would be appreicated

Oh, my truck is a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab Laramie 5.7L Hemi 4x4

How wide are factory wheels. I'm running 35x12.50 on a 17x9" rim. I have 3" lift in the front and like 1 in the back. Just enough for 35's and lots of flex room.

you will want the superchips 3865 I believe.

your rear diff is a 10.5 AAM. Way beefier than a normal 1500. This means your front is a 9.25 AAM as well. These are they same axles in a 2500 gas powered truck.

Does your truck have a LSD (limited slip)? These trucks use a helical design and they actually work pretty good (at least mine does). I would not bother swapping provided you have one as these units are reliable unlike the baby 1500 (not mega) trucks LSD.

So the shortlist.

35 = 3" lift possible use of factory wheels

37 = 4 to 5" lift aftermarket wheels

Super chips 3865

9.25 front axle and 10.5 rear for 4.56's

Pass on LSD unless you have an open rear diff now.

Hemi guy
Do you know what bolt pattern my truck has? I'm looking at after market wheels but don't know which pattern my truck is... Also, is there a minimum backspacing I will need in order to fit 37's?

How could I find out if my truck has a LSD or not?

For the lift kits, do you have any recommendations for a lift? For a lift I'll need something I can fit 37's so I guess that's like a 4" minimum. I think I read somewhere once that a lift for a 2500 could fit a 1500 mega. Is that true? If so it definately expanded the lifts I can look at Anything you can think of would be good but cheaper is better assuming it's still good quality

Again, thanks for the info so far

Remebered one more thing.
For the gears do I just need the Ring and Pinion for front and rear? There are two kits at moe's performance that have bearings in them..
Just the Ring's and Pinion's are WAY cheaper tho lol.

You have a 8 by 165mm bolt pattern I believe. This coverts to 8 on 6.5".

No idea about the back spacing as I bought this truck with the wheels tires and lift on.

You can find info on the LSD by opening your glove box door. In the door there will be a sticker telling you what gears you have in the differentials and if there is a LSD or not.

You are right about about the 2500 suspension working on a Mega. Ask RamHunter on his setup as he too is clearing 37's on a 1500 Mega. Not too sure on what kit he is running though. Hopefully he shows up.

As for the ring and pinion thing it all depend on how many miles are on the truck. If you are low mileage then I would not worry about new bearings but if the truck is used hard or has some big mileage numbers then get new bearings. Keep in mind though if you do re use bearings they may or may not be damaged when being pressed on or off the carrier or pinion. When we did my gears all the bearing were in pristine condition and the oil was perfectly clean so we went ahead and reused the bearings except for the pinion bearing which I broke upon its removal.

Hope this clears some stuff up with you.

Side note what gears do you currently have?

K I will check on the Differential or LSD tomorrow. Thanks for the bolt pattern

I will have around 70,000km after my trip so... I don't think that is too much mileage... but lemme know what you think if the bearings need to be replaced or not.

I currently have 3.73 gears, I think, if it's on that sticker I will double check it tomorrow when I look.

That's great about the suspension cause that gives me alot more to choose from

I read in another thread that the 4.56 gears should improve gas mileage slightly and add a little more power to the truck which is definately something I am looking for. I eventually play to do exhaust and a CAI as well but I think I will start with these things. Plus when I do get the 37's which is what I am leaning towards I will need the gears to help turn the tires easier won't I?

Well, with this info and hopefully Evomega08 and RH can add their 2 cents I can start pricing things out and see how long it will be before I can start upgrading

Btw, I'm not a mechanic by any means but am pretty decent at figuring things out and working with mechanical bits but, would thesee modifications be difficult to do on my own? I have a few buddies who know a lot more than I and have more experience that hopefully can help out too.

Again, thanks for the info and assistance

Snoopie, AF has an 03, sorry no trans support as we are the forgottens. Personnaly I like the Auburn but am spending the extra on a DTT as then I will not have to worry about the Friction Modifier.
Hemiguy0302 knows the 2500 set-up which I beleive is the same as your megacab and like he said Ramhunter and a few others can help you out too.

So, I ran into another issue that I have a question for

It seems the tires I want Toyo Open country MT's come only in 37x13.5

The lift kits I have found all say recommended sizes are 37x12.5
How do I get around this? Is this where the backspacing comes in? Do I need some kind of spacers? I'm thinking I'm gonna stick with 17 inch rims, I'll check my rims to see how wide they are too...

Any thoughts anyone?
