Default 06 Hemi - Crazed Tachometer

Hey All,

My tach has been possessed lately and finally went kaput I think. Recently it had been reading like 300 RPM when cruising and I'd hit the gas and the tach did nothing, unless I hammered down the gas, it'd jump to 5K then shift through all gears correctly but drop back down. Then about a week later it was doing the same thing except it was at 0 or less most times. Then today it jumped up to 5K, flung back down to 0 and spiked back to 5K bounced a bit then wound all the way around to the underside of the 0 peg, and is stuck there. Anyone have this problem? Any solutions, or at least ideas as to what to try to solve this problem?? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank You in Advance,

Eric

Has your dash been apart lately? We had an SRT 10 and the installer of the radar jammer had the dash and gauge cluster apart and what happened was the fascia that has the numbers on it lifted and the needle was hanging up on it causing erratic movement like you described. This is just a possibility could very well be electrical too.

Nope, haven't torn dash apart or anything. It just out of the blue decided to act up.

A friend of mine's did the same thing. Then the rpm arrow quit moving all together. Dealer told him he needed a whole new cluster....$600 installed!

Sweet. Not that I'd pay $600...I'll install it myself, but I'm sure the part itself is at least $200. I love putting money into (besides maintenance) vehicles when they aren't even paid for yet

Ok, the tach is really weird now...As I said it's been stuck on the underside of the 0 peg...but today while I was passing someone, it rolled backwards to 6K and as soon as I let off the gas it dropped back down to the underside of peg.

Still doing it. I get on it a bit and it rolls backwards to 5-6K, and as it shifts through gears and gets to cruising...it shows actually higher RPMS but keep in mind it is working bass ackwards...and at cruising rpm, it is on under side of 0 peg

there's a little gear in the back of it I believe that goes bad, there's a company called us speedo that might be able to help. My Speedo get's stuck and bounces every once in a while. Shouldn't need to change the whole cluster, worst case buy one off ebay and splice the parts in.

Mine does the exact same thing. It's definitely in the dash. If I smack the dash while sitting there at idle, it will pop back up to about 650 and then back to 300.
