Default homebrew cai with heavy pics - good or bad?

i was looking and looking for a nice k&n setup but couldnt find anything cheap enough,so i went to home depot and auto zone and then went to work. if you like doing diy projects then i highly recommend getting a dremel- i bought one today and love it. before u look at the pics ---- i first went with the basic looking pvc intake with a spectra filter on it.i had it sitting in the bottom part of the stock intake. after looking for a way to block the heat i broke out the dremel and cut the top part of the stock intake so that it would go around the pvc and lock back onto the bottom ( i had a spare stock top) and now it loks like the factory setup except now there is pvc going to the tb and the spectra filter is in the box and its sucks alot of air through the stock boxes snorkel thing.there is also a small spectra filter on the air tube going into the stock box as well. so the question is : is my setup good or am i better off just leaving the top of the stock box off? i figure this way that im getting the most cold air i can instead of leaving the filter out in the open where its gonna suck in warm/hot air all the time.

anyone have any good ideas of a logo i can put on the pvc straight part? its a 2x9 area. ok now on to the pics!

I'd think leaving the lid off would be better, but I'm not sure.

the small hose has a filter inside the box (not shown) the pics with no top was just to show the big filter sitting inside the box. so should i leave the top on or take it off?

I would leave the lid on to keep hot air out. And it looks really good like that too.

The enclosed box/ open box / no box has been debated forever. I've seen "independent test data" showing where each one is better, depends on which company is throwing an advertisement in the car/truck mag that month.

The closed box shields from the heat of the engine, but a completely open design has a greater volume of air circulating around it thus dissipating more heat. The open box is supposedly the best of both.

IMO, there probably isn't enough difference in any one to make a performance difference unless it's kinda like the Vararam where the air is coming directly from low and outside the vehicle. But of course, that opens things up for hydro locking, so again, there are pluses and minuses...

I would leave it off. Since our grills are so big the only time it would actually suck in hot air off the engine would be while you are idling. When you are driving you have freshair cooling the engine bay thru the big open grill. Its totally your call but I think an open box is your best bet.
