you are right. My Bad it has been a couple years since I had the 98 Ram. I am old school I prefer the good old CI. My 98 Dodge had the the 318CI engine. The Only problem is the Hemi would sound funny saying 345CI.

 

In my 06 2500 owners manual, theres a blurb abought how Heavy duty trucks have to meet US noise regulations and my 2500 Ram meets thease regulations, Depending on your state athority, you can be fined, or fail a insurance inspection if you do not have a muffler.

You need the cats for emissons and thiers no harm to the truck running stright pipes.

Turff the y pipe and run two individual mufflers, they will have to be mounted on the side, no room on the flat ( flue tank is in the way ) and have the rear tail pipes mandrell bent, my dual ex converison is still a on going process.

Other than possibly getting a ticket for noise violations, you shouldn't have any problems running no muffler.

the only problem with running no muffler is you will lose a whole bunch of torque (which is the last thing you wanna lose with a truck). you will most likely be able to feel the loss of power when you stomp on the gas. Since you are ok with the sound then the torgue is the only thing you have to worry about. I personally would go with the flowmaster 40 series or even 30 series if the 40's aren't loud enough. hope this helps.

 

Took mine to a muffler shop in Oceanside, California and had them build a new "y" and put an 18" magnaflow in with all new 2.5" pipe. Good sound without being too loud. I was amazed at how collapsed the y-pipe after crawling under the truck, that's why I had them build a new one.
