got a CEL last night coming Home...
I was coming home from work last night around Midnight when the CEL came on. I don't have a way to check it right now but Have to drive to Springfield IL. 170 Miles one way, truck is still running fine, question is any guess and should I still take it to springfield I have about an Hour to decide.... Help!
You should take it to your local auto parts store and have the code pulled for free THEN decide if it's ok to use the truck... Could be as simple as a rear O2 sensor or EGR or could be the beginning of a serious problem, so you really can't make a good decision until you know the code...
Local Advance and Auto Zone here open at 7 am, NAPA is 8.
If you don't have time to get to a place to have the code read and have access to another vehicle, I'd take it just to be on the safe side. Probably nothing major, but you never know...
Did you try the "key trick" to get the code? It's in the FAQ section...

i get a CEL when i "top-up" my gas tank. if you overfill it gas can get into the vacuum system and throw the code
this always happened to me because i wanted to maximize my distance but i dont do that anymore

Get the code before you go driving around on a long trip. There is no point in guessing if you will be ok to make the trip because without the code there is really no way of knowing.

well coming home from Springfield the CEL was not lit on the dash, I was getting 15mpg by the console the whole way down and back. Had Autozone check for any codes and there were none. I am wondering if like Marx said Because I did top of the tank before I got the CEL. Thanks for the advice and the quick returns.
I made the mistake of topping off the tank and got a CEL. It turned itself off once I drove a bit, the evap system gets confused if you get any gas around the entry point to the tank. I did this twice before I learned my lesson.
