Default 180 T-stat not opening?

Hey guys,

I just installed a JET 180 t-stat (I followed directions in the haynes manual). After I installed it I put the coolant back in the expansion tank and started the truck. After a while it got INCREDIBLY hot! Almost to the red line. I have a good feeling the t-stat isn't opening. Could anyone shed some light to something I may have done wrong? Is there a certain position the t-stat should be in?

Thanks!

Are you sure that you oriented the t-stat the right direction when you installed it?

That could be my problem. I kinda just popped it in there. How should it be oriented?

Btw, that radiator hose clamp was a pain in the *** to take off! That part took me the longest!

More than likely it is air bound. Letting it set and cool back down will sometime allow the air to escape. That is why I used an asprin, especially if there is no bleed hole. Massage the hose (no pun) and you might get some water on it to open. If you take it out. Before you re-install it again, put it in a pan of boiling water to makes sure it opens. Good luck...

Alright I'll try that. As far as the asprin goes, when/where should I put it? Also, how should the t-stat be oriented?

It'll only fit in one direction. The asprin is wedge in the thermostat'e opening holding it open for the water to circulate while the engine is still cold. This allows the air to excape. So when it does come up to temperature the hot water will then properly operate the thermostat and the asprin will disolve. If you have any question about this let me know and I'll post up a picture. Good Luck..

I was told the valve should be at the 12 o clock position. I'll look for an arrow and make sure it's point away from the engine. I'll also try the asprin trick. Thanks!

T stat has two sides, one is pointed and one with a coil. THe point always points towards the radiator and the coil part towards the engine It won't open if it is in backwards.

It's possible you got a bad T-Stat, but I doubt it. You could remove it and do the "drop in a pot of boiling water" trick and look for it to open.

Sounds to me like you got air in the system when you opened it up. Burp it (FAQ section)...
