Default Taillight tenting is it illegal in Illinois?

I have been looking at tenting my brake lights. I am from Illinois and am having problems finding out the legality of it. I love the look and you guys that have it makes me want it even more. I do know there is a yellow dodge 1500 in my area that has smoked leds and it looks good. Can someone help me. From what I have read there is not a law against it but if the cop wants to pull you over it gives them more of a reason to.

It's not legal in AZ but i ran my color matched tails and a dark tinted OEM 3rd brake light for 3 years with no issues. I still run the tinted 3rd brake. That is me though so the next guy could of been pulled over 3 times a day for tinted rear lights. Just the same as folks that run limo tint, some get pulled over all the time, other may never. I got a fix it ticket for my limo tint side windows with no mention of my lights and he was telling me how he liked the pet design license plate.

There are laws on the books in almost every state regarding lights and will range from:

"Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear."

to:

"you MAY NOT alter any vehicle light equipment unless it is D.O.T. approved equipment that meet OEM specifications"

Although it's usually not enforced unless done to extreme, it's a good bet that if a cop wanted to bust your cookies or just needed an excuse to pull you over, that tinted tails would be enough to do it...

Just tint them 6-7 coats, so they have a nice tinted appearance... not blacked out! Don't overdue it or the cops will getcha! If you think they'll have a problem, then do what I did... buy an under-tailgate light bar, like this one : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/49-RE...item35aa4a37cd

Looks great, great functionability, easy to wire up, and 99.99% of the time, the cops will leave you alone, because of the added light.

6-7coats is alot Trup. I sprayed mine using 2-3 coats of VHT and I can barely see the red through the tint on a sunny day. I certainly wouldn't want them darker because others will have a hard time seeing the brake lights. This is with the tail lights on at night. NOT brakes, my legs aren't long enough to reach the pedal and snap the pic...lol

I haven't checked on this but considering as how the legal max for windows is 35% I would say yes. That, and Illinois being one of the worst when it comes to stupid meaningless restrictions would lead me to say that it is probably illegal. If I were you just get a set of DOT approved smoked lights and you'll be good to go.
