Check out the above link. It is a towing guide for Dodge vehicles. Your truck either has the 3.55's or 3.92's. If it didn't come with the tow package then it most likely has the 3.55's. They will still do the job for towing stuff it would just be much easier with 3.92's.

Ours came with towing package, 3.92's.
For a 4.7 1500, i would definately say that you're require a 5th wheel, gooseneck, or weight distributing hitch. A standard bumper pull won't work. Oh, and trailer brake also required. Literally- Down here in Tx at least, you have to have any trailer with living quarters annually inspected just like your truck, and part of that inspection is a trailer brake test. IDK how other states are.
With our racecar, it weighs 2800 pounds, the trailer is 2200 pounds, and we load a safe-guessed 500 pounds of stuff in the bed. For the 6 miles to the local strip, we're riding solidly on the rear bumpstops, and almost on the fronts.

All he really needs to do is install a Class IV (10,000 lb) receiver with Weight Distributing hitch.
Ram 1500's are not good for 5th wheels. I've seen it done but they had air bags or some thing to help out. 5th wheels still aren't recommended since most 5th wheel trailers surpass the weight limitations on our 1/2 ton trucks.

Check on the rear diff. or the glove box. If you cant find anything there then try bringing it to a dealership, giving them the VIN and they should be able to get you the build sheet for it. But if it didn't come with the tow package then most likely it has the 3.55's.
