Dyslexic Truck

Dyslexic Truck
So, here I am in the middle of a 5500 mile road trip with my family towing a trailer across Western Canada and through 4 of the northwest states, and my wife almost smokes me upside the head for signaling to right when I change lanes to the left.
I thought I maybe just had a lapse in remembering how to operate my signal arm and shrugged it off..
800 miles later, I'm trying to change lanes on the I5 and I noticed people aren't giving me an inch of room to change lanes. I realize every time I signaled left, my right signal light came on! To signal left, I had to turn on my hazard lights which only illuminated the left signal light.
I got the truck fixed down in Eugene, and they didn't seem to surprised and knew right away it was the multi-way switch. Just wondering if this is common, or if there's something that could cause this.... Apparently it would have been in the neighbourhood of about $500 to fix, but Gold coverage covered it.
Anyone else's truck ever been dangerously dyslexic?

It didn't take the stealer long to do it... I think it was a 45 minute job.
Amazing that in this small of a sample, everyone that had this happen had an 06...
I found this on another site.. I should not have had to pay for my 'service contract' to cover this...
NHTSA Linky - http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...h&summary=true
NHTSA Action Number : PE08059
NHTSA Recall Campaign Number : N/A
Make/Model/Build Years: DODGE / RAM 3500 / 2006
Manufacturer : CHRYSLER LLC
Component :
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL:SWITCH
Date Investigation Opened : October 7, 2008
Date Investigation Closed : April 17, 2009
Summary:
ODI HAS CLOSED THIS INVESTIGATION BASED ON A REVIEW OF
THE COMPLAINTS, OTHER FIELD DATA AND TECHNICAL DATA
SUBMITTED BY CHRYSLER TO THE AGENCY. CHRYSLER REPORTS
THAT THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH IS HARD WIRED INTO THE
INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (IC) AND THE CLUSTER DECIDES WHICH
DIRECTION HAS BEEN SELECTED BASED ON AN ELECTRICAL SIGNAL
FROM THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH. THE IC SENDS A SIGNAL TO
THE VEHICLE'S TOTALLY INTEGRATED POWER MODULE (TIPM) AND
THE TIPM RESPONDS BY CONTROLLING THE VOLTAGE AND FLASH
RATE OF THE EXTERIOR TURN SIGNAL LAMPS AND THE INSTRUMENT
PANEL INDICATOR. CHRYSLER'S TESTING FOUND THAT IMPROPER
LEVELS OF RESISTANCE WITHIN THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH MAY
RESULT IN THE IC SELECTING THE WRONG DIRECTION.
COMPLAINANTS SAY THAT WHEN THE TURN SIGNAL IS USED, THE
VEHICLE MAY SIGNAL THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION AND THAT THE
PROBLEM IS OFTEN INTERMITTENT. THIS WOULD BE EVIDENT FROM
THE TURN INDICATOR LAMPS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AS WELL
AS THE EXTERIOR TURN SIGNAL LAMPS. EITHER RIGHT OR LEFT
SIGNALS MAY BE AFFECTED. DEALERS ARE CORRECTING THIS BY
REPLACING MULTIFUNCTION SWITCHES ON THE STEERING
COLUMN. NEITHER ODI NOR CHRYSLER HAS RECEIVED ANY REPORT
OF A CRASH RELATED TO THE SUBJECT CONDITION. CHRYSLER
WILL IMPLEMENT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE SUBJECT
VEHICLE POPULATION. NOTIFICATION TO VEHICLE OWNERS IS TO
BEGIN IN MAY 2009. THIS ACTION IS CONSISTENT WITH THAT
TAKEN IN OTHER INVESTIGATIONS INVOLVING TURN SIGNAL
FAILURES AT SIMILAR RATES. FURTHER USE OF AGENCY
RESOURCES DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WARRANTED AT THIS TIME.
ACCORDINGLY THIS INVESTIGATION IS CLOSED. THE CLOSING OF
THIS INVESTIGATION DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FINDING BY NHTSA
THAT A SAFETY RELATED DEFECT DOES NOT EXIST. THE AGENCY
WILL TAKE FURTHER ACTION IF WARRANTED BY THE
CIRCUMSTANCES.
