I don't know anything about rear ends or gears. But is there any way of knowing if these clips are getting ready to go by looking at them or inspecting them? Can you replace just the clips to avoid this problem? I'm going to be towing a large trailer 2300 miles in a couple months and would hate for this to happen to me then.

Al.

I did put a bottle I bought from an auto parts store at the time of the fluid change, but you got me thinking. So I went and bought a bottle from the dealership, and I believe that might have fixed it. Not sure if the original bottle I put in wasnt enough or was just a bottle of crap product. I appreciate your help.

you can change them to the revised versions which were built mid 2005+, but the clips themselves are a PIA to replace. You need to take the whole carrier out and probably apart to do so. They are call "Clutch Pack retaining clips" if you were to ask the part from a dealer. They are also W-shaped. I know people refer to them as c-clips, but they are NOT. C-clips actually hold the axles in place and together from pulling out of the housing. These Retaining clips hold the clutch packs together from bacging around inside the housing. People have pulled the clips out and left their differential that way, but it's only a matter of time before the clutch discs get worn badly where they will just start spinning around inside the housing. You will experience clunking after a while as well. Another member showed pictures after 20kmi and there was significant wear/damage to the carrier housing. It hadn't efected operation yet, but there was signs of rubbing going on. I guess that situation beats a diff locking up....

What Fluid did you use? Must have been a No-Name brand???
Most Synthetics have modifier in them already(Name Brands)
9.25" Corp Diff only require 4oz of modifier. Mopar modifier is nothing special.

I have an 03 with 216,000 miles and (knock on wood) I haven't had a peep from the rear different and have done a moderate amount of heavy towing. I have a 3.92 traclok gear. Should I be concerned about this retaining clip issue or is it just for the 3.55 LSD?

So if I have a 2007 do I have the "revised versions" already?

if this has happend to you in Canada like it did to me, we need to report the problem with transport canada (1 800 333 0510) so they can issue a recall for this defect. i have a 09 dodge ram 1500 and same deal, i was driving down the road heard something fall from under truck next thing you know my driveshaft is following me. dif locked up and everything, worse part is they want $4000 to fix. i think dodge can address this issue alittle better. good thing i wasnt on the highway, i guess someone has to get killed before they take things serious.
and how the hell can you have a liftime powertrain warrenty in the US and up here we get 5 year 100000 km (60000mile) warrenty garbage.
not impressed with dodge thats for sure

I just looked on my window sticker to see if I have the LSD rear end. I didn't see anything about it on there. I have an '07 QCSB 4x4 with the Hemi and the 3.92 axle ratio. Is there any way to find out if my ttruck was built with the LSD or not? Isn' tthere a site where I can punch in my VIN and see the actual build sheet?

two axle stands under the rear diff, put truck in N, have a bud hold the left rear wheal, you turn the right rear wheal, if you turn your wheel you don't have a ltd slip, do this on booth sides as Im not 100% on what is the drive side on a non LSD.

As for Tansport canada, ( canadian owners) please call them at the first sign of any safety defect, it not just the 1500 Rams that have issues, the 2500 Rams have issues with the drag link falling off the the bottom left front hub ( ask and i will post pics of my truck )
