Newbie Needs Help
Good evening everyone
Just want to say this site has an incredible wealth of knowledge that I am just sifting through since I found it. Anyways, my 2002 1500 died this morning and after getting the belt off, my a/c compressor does not spin and seems to have frozen up. It has been giving me problems lately, but I don't want to replace it because it is too expensive since I don't use my a/c. So does anyone know anywhere, have a measurement, or part number for a shorter belt I could use because I would rather get a shorter belt and bypass the a/c compressor altogether. My engine size is the 1500 4.7L.
Thanks
Chris

I could be wrong, but to run without ac you still need to get a different tensioner to replace where the compressor would go. I think your best bet would be to go to your local boneyard and get a working ac compressor, even if you never recharge the system. And it would still help with the value of the truck if you ever choose to resell.
If you dont have a junkyard try here www.car-part.com
they will ship right to your door usually.
Good luck and welcome to DF!

I actually called the local Dodge garage and the guy said I should be able to take the compressor out. I have called around but the cheapest one of the yards around here wants is $200, which is way more than I want to pay for a part that I won't use. The Dodge guy said I would need trial and error to get the right measurement so again if anybody has that magical measurement, I(and my wife's patience) would greatly appreciate it.

according to summit you need a 87.50 in belt

And I looked it up, you can just run a smaller belt without having to get any other pulleys etc.
hope that helps

For all those interested, the part Summit sent was the same size as the stock with the A/C compressor (87.5 in). It did another day but a local place helped me find the right size if you want to by pass the A/C compressor pulley, although you will still have to get the pulley off or else it will rub the belt. The belt that fits perfect is the Goodyear 84in. Works great only thing is no A/C, but I think I used it once in three years so no big deal.
