Smile broken off bolts inside rear diff

Hi people,

My name is Rick, i live in Holland and drive a ram 1500 sport (on LPG)

yesterday i came back from france, and found out that my rear ABS sencor was broken, after replacing it, i found that the original one wase damaged, so i removed the back cover from the diff, only to find out that there where 4 bolts broken inside,

the bolts are holding the ABS plate against the big gear, (in holland whe call it the crown wheel) i called the dealer, but as iti is a self imported vehicle, there is slim chance that it will be a warrenty isseu,

any of you got an idea what causes such an event?

and do these bolts onle hold the ABS plate? or do the have another function?

Sincerely Rick Wolting

are you the original owner?
are you talking about the ring gear bolts or the bolts on the end of the axle tubes?

We call those the ring bolt which is what brettj asked about. There are 12 of them and the part number is 06036054AA. They are about $6 each

my guess is it was re-geared or serviced. because they should have been torqued down

I'm wondering if the bolts were properly tightened in the first place. Once a few got loose, the others were more burdened with the task of holding the ring gear (crown gear) to the differential housing. It could be that the previous owner had taken it apart for some reason, or they may not have been tightened properly in the first place.

Unless you're familiar with aligning and setting up the ring and pinion gears, I'd get it to an experienced shop and let them put new bolts in and make sure that the gears are properly aligned. They will use shims if needed to get the proper measurements.
