Ram 2500 Model Year Differences
#11
the motor change is actually VERY significant. Dodge changed over to the 6.7L midway thru 2006. so some have 5.9's and some have the 6.7L. the increase in displacement/hp/tq is in response to EPA clean diesel act 3 years soon than the other 2 mfg's. The 5.9 has the 4 spd auto and the 6.7 has the new 68RFE tranny. the 5.9 is what "everyone" wants as they can still achieve 18+ mpgs (some claim low to mid 20's with programmers)Both engines have suffered a loss in mileage when ultra low sulfer diesel was introduced. The new 6.7 needs to be worked out, doesn't like to idle, and gets mid teens in fuel mileage. now both will pull down a house, but only the 5.9 will make black smoke while doing it. Some are deleting the DPF which will void your 100k powertrain wrty, but they claim 5.9L results in doing so. Exterior, pretty close overall.
06's had a amber strip on the bottom of the headlights, 09's dont. Different taillights and badging as well

I don't mind the tail lights on my 07 2500. I've had minor issues pop up but most were dealt with fairly easily. The brakes are a weak area though. Large and they perform adequately but the factory pads and rotors appear to be wearing out a bit prematurely(34k). I've always braked pretty even with the Ram.
The Michelin LTX A/S tires ride extremely well but the side walls are exhibiting a small amount of cracking close to the rim. So far the u-joints haven't weakened or failed on me. Not to say it can't happen but I'm assuming I'll be doing those in the next 20-25k miles.
Cyclone, care to elaborate on the axle shafts? Interesting info?

in 2wd on a solid axle 4x4, the front diff is turning, if a u joint on the front drive wheal seazes up, your not going any where. I had the rear u joint and carrier bearing on the rear diff replaced due to a vibration.
My truck had the BRG R/T T/A, garbage from day one, never had brake or stearing issues ( lighter hemi engine ?? )
I'm at 100,000 km now, and verry surprised the stock drive line could not handel the 5.7 hemi, but, chances are I just own a querky truck.

As stated above the differences are primarily engine and trans.
As always they are pretty tough trucks, second only to a superduty. To the people needing new wheel bearings, u-joints etc. so soon i dont know what you were doing but i do parts and work with these trucks everyday in one of the coldest and harshest climates and they still hold up year after year. The only real problem is the hundreds of p/s hoses we go through... but once again mostly driver error.

Left front axle shaft righr front axle shaft, front u joints on the front drive wheals are non servicable, I had all replaced under warranty, got to the point where the front wheels would not turn, left one went first, than the right went abought 10,000 km later.

Need to correct my OP. 5.9L cummins arrived in 2007 models starting sept 06 until march '07, when the 6.7 was introduced...so some 07's have 5.9 and some have 6.7 (referred to as 07.5+)

It's possible that you have the one out of a thousand 2500 that's the unofficially designated anomaly. I've talked to several longtime third gen 2500 owners, gas and diesel. Most have pushed their 2500 to their limit and others just normal usage but about all are quite pleased with them.
What angered me the most is that they did hear these things when it was prepped? Dont get me wrong,I dont know if the previous owner beat it or abused it if he had a plow on it.
Funny part is owners manual for maintanance on fron diff u-joint= Spray with white lithium grease at oil change. Lmao,Why dont you try grease fitting on your u-joints
