Help me understand limited slip
The "C" clip that holds the axle in is not the clip they are talking about. These are little retaining clips used when installing the clutch packs. If you've got more than 50k miles on your LSD I guarantee you've got at least one broken clip in there(there's 4 total). Pull your cover off and take a look before it's too late. the LSD will still continue to work with a broken clip, you just run the risk of getting a piece of the clip jammed between the gears and grenading your rear end.

Yeah a Detroit true trac is great, but it cost 500 bucks and you gotta pay someone 300 dollars to setup the rear end. It never wears out since it's gear driven instead of clutch driven. It works a lot better too.
As far as the clutches wearing, I had an Auburn in my 2nd Gen and at 68k when I traded the truck in, it still worked like it did on day one. Auburn rates the units for 100,000 miles with HEAVY use.
I have an Auburn in my 3rd Gen as well. Wanted to try a TruTrac but at the time, Detroit was in the process of being bought out by Eaton, and NOBODY had the DTT for the 9.25" AAM axle and couldn't get a firm ship date. Another factor was (at least at the time), the manufacturer did/does not recommend the DTT for tires over 33" (although I've since known MANY guys with bigger tires and a DTT and NO ISSUES).
Rule of thumb is DTT for off-road use, Auburn for a street/strip truck. The clutch system engages slightly faster than the gear system for slightly better times. ALSO the Auburn is available in a PRO series with a considerably higher bias than their Performance series or a DTT. Not very streetable, but lock up is close to a true locker...
Thanks for the help. I guess I'll be putting in a new LSD soon. I might as well look at gears while I'm at it. Truck has 3.92 gears and the 20in wheels with 265 70 20 tires. Pulling at 65mph the truck is at 1850 rpm and with tow/haul at 2100 rpm. I tow my 24ft boat for about 75% of my driving. Any suggestions on gears?
