Default How can I tell what gears I have???

Hi everyone I just bought a 2006 ram 4x4 hemi, I was wondering if theres any way to know if the gears have been changed without having to open it up. I noticed that the gear box has been opened because I can see the glue that came out the sides when they closed it. Any help will be appreciated..

Is usually either a sticker in the glove box or a tag on the rear axle. If you strike out there, you can go to the Dodge Truck website and request a build sheet...

the rtv sticking out of the sides of the cover means nothing about opening the cover. they come that way from the factory unless it looks like its smeaered everywhere. what color is the RTV?
i wanna say its black from the factory and if it was serviced at a dealer while taking the cover off they have GRAY RTV they use.
if you get me your vin i can look it up for you but that would be telling you what it came with from the factory. the only way to tell is open it up and inspect.
you can try marking your driveshaft and turning it with your truck in nuetral and mark your tires as well and take an educated guess how many times your driveshaft turns to your tires

The glue sealer coming out the sides is blue and looks a bit smeared and actually had a finger print in the same blue color. I was hoping the previous owner had already changed the gears out, but it could have just been serviced. I guess im gonna have to open it up and look. What should I look for? Is there a way of telling the gear ratio from looking at it or would I have to do something else?

count the teeth or mark a dot or line with marking compound and spin your yoke to get a guess.
for a 3.55 your driveshaft will turn 3.5 times to your tires.
if you have a 3.92 your drivshaft/toke will turn just under 4 times to your axles

What he said.

Mine had red RTV around it when I did the diff service. I suspect that's what happened with yours. It had probably had the fluid changed.

Funny this thread popped up. I just found out yesterday the "lady" that I bought the truck from a while back not only put a shift kit in, but also differ gears. Explains the mpg,lol

You can start here with how it benefits your transmission, then from there use the search feature. There are literally hundreds of threads on re-gearing...
