+1 to weed

If you're going to have a shop do the rebuild, you might as well look around for a replacement or beefier motor. That is if you aren't going to get a new truck.

If you're going to get a new truck do a lot of forum searches and read a lot of reviews. Some S10s can be nice... but some can be a royal POS. Ask for the carfax.

Then I'd dive right into rebuilding that thing.

If you're gonna drive something else in the meantime, rebuild or replace it yourself. I'm nearly finished my motor rebuild and I have very very little mechanical experience. It just takes some time and research.
