Default 4x4 transfer

So I was reading in my manual that its ok to transfer from 2 high to 4 high while in motion. The Manual says that you can do it up to about 60mph. I always thought that you had to be in neutral and at a stop to put it in 4x4. My question is, will it damage the transfer case or motor or tranny by switching while in motion or is it better to just do it when at a stop?

I have an automatic tranny with manual 4x4 on the floor if that makes a difference.

You should be fine switching while moving. My 05 Hemi had a manual 4x4 shifter on the floor and I just took my foot off the accelerator when I switched. I know you have to be in neutral to get into 4low

Only 4Lo requires you to be stopped and in nuetral or moving very slow while in gear <5mph(crawl) is best

To answer your other question, No it doesn't damage anything to shift into 4hi while moving, However it is important to not have your foot on the accelerator while you do it and it is important to not do it on dry pavement.

Does this go for the non-manual 4x4 (electronic switch on dash)?

My manual says that I don't have to slow down to switch from 2wd to 4wd lock. Switch from 4wd lock to 4wd low preferably should be made on stopped vehicle. Of course there is several rules when you engage 4wd. I assume writers of this manual got an instructions what to write from engineers :-) so most likely it is safe.

Jake, Yes its the same for electronic 4wd. Only difference between the Manual transfer case and electronic is the push button uses a motor to move the mode fork while the manual uses you to move the mode fork.

Slava, You don't have to slow down, Just be on a coast for the second it takes to switch. Accelerating while shifting to 4hi is a great way to end up replacing the transfer case among other things. Transfer cases in these trucks are definitely not the most stout out there.
