Default OEM 20's question

Newbie here if this thread is in the wrong place feel free to move. I been looking for the chrome clad 20's and after doing some research realized that they are just wheel skin's basicly. Am i reading that right are they just covers because i have the regular alluminum 20's now so i would just basicly be getting the same wheels with a chrome hub-cap. If this is right then if i went and bought the covers and put them on would they look factory of do they do a special process to make them look so good. I just don't want it to look like i have hub-caps i want it to look factory. Any help would be appreciated plus all that saved money can go towards other mods

i dont believe you can buy the chrome covers and put them over your powder coated one's.
Yes, they are just chrome coated plastic. For that reason, when i bought my truck, I specifically went for the powdercoated one's.

Unless the cladding is ultra thin (.030 or less) with no supporting ribs on the back (which I'm sure it does) there is no way it would fit over the powdercoated wheels. If you think about it, to get the outside shape of the cladding and the polished wheel to look the same, the rim underneath has to be a different shape and be offset deeper into the wheel.

For what it's worth as well. I have about 68K miles on my 05 cladded 20"s. The truck has spend it's whole life in Phoenix AZ. The wheels have never seen road salt, or for that matter, the wheels see the most water when I wash them. I am careful when washing to be gentle so as to not scratch the surface, and I wash them a couple times a month to keep the brake dust from etching the wheels. My wheels look pretty good for the age. I even had someone approach me at the Grand Canyon the other day and ask where I got those "awsome" wheels, so she could get some for her Ram. She sounded German or Austrian, so maybe Dodge never put the 20"s on truck's that went overseas? IDK. My point is if you live in terperate climates and take care of the cladding, I hope it will look good for a long time, but the potential is there to eaisly tear them up and have the chrome start to peel if you live in harsher climates.

I don't have a problem with the plastic parts over here in the UK in our harsh climate.....rain/snow and road salts etc.
But, the outer edge around the wheel and where the chrome cladding doesn't cover, oxidises and looks bad.

I'm glad you posted this question because I have a 2010 w/ 20's and i've been wondering if I can take off my chrome skins so that I can paint my wheels black. Anyone know or has this already been done?

The OEM clad wheel is considered one piece and the cladding is not sold seperate. If you have the OEM polished aluminum petal wheel than you have the wheel many consider the one to have. I believe the petal wheel came in three versions. 1. polished aluminum. 2.chrome plated. 3. Plastic clad. IMO they all look good with the polished aluminum having a deeper shine.
