Default 5th???

This may seem like a stupid question but when is the tranny supposed to switch into 5th? Like RPMS and driving speed wise...

Reason why I ask is that I switched the display over on my tuner and noticed that I was still in forth when I was traveling at 110km/h...I had to pick it up to 120 then apply the breaks to get it to shift.

Should it not be into 5th at that time? I have my WOT shift points set pretty high...i think 5800 in first and 5400 in second...would that do it?

I would hope that bumping it into 5th gear would get me better mileage...

oh and it does not even shift going down the hill..not until I speed up and slow down....

That Bully Dog may not detect it changing or cannot read it from the TCM. As soon as mine hits the first OD gear you can feel it shift into the second one. Just get out there and drive it and listen to the engine and RPMs and feel the shifts. With you having the Sonnax like me you should easily feel the shifting.

The only time I have seen a trans shift like that when having to take your foot off the gas or on the brake is a rebuilt trans. Is yours all original? if so then it make be time to have a shop check it out.

I have noticed on my 07 that it will not shift in to 5th very quickly if you gradually get up to speed ( not topping 2-2.5k rpm to get up to 70-75mph), but it will eventually (after a mile or 2) drop into 5th. I certainly don't have to accelerate and then brake to get it into 5th.

Try accelerating slightly more aggressive to see if it will shift into 5th, otherwise it sounds like you may have a tranny issue to be looked at by the pro's

This is the same problem I had with the Sonnax and the Diablo tuner, had to take the Sonnax back off. Even at 70 Mph on the interstate I had a hard time getting it into 5th and the first little grade it would drop back. I tried resetting the PCM and even dropping the shift points on the tuner, I couldn't get it to work on my 07.

My truck takes fooooorever to shift into 5th and I actually like it and prefer it. The reason is because 5th is an extra O/D gear and to prevent constant downshifting for short distances, the TCM shifts into that gear slowly. I mean mine takes about 1 full mile to shift itno 5th after it shifts into 4th at highway speeds and steady throttle. otherwise, the slightest increase in throttle would cause the trans to keep downshifting and up shifting

Hi,

I have a '06 Durango with a Hemi and an '07 1500 with a Hemi. Both are all stock and Both do the same thing. Have taken the Durango in and had service tech ride along with comp hooked up and was not engaging 5th. When i first noticed on Durango I found i could hit Decel once with cruise and it would drop into 5th every time like clockwork, but nothing else would do it. I demonstrated this on ride with tech. Was and still is under warranty and service manager said " Dodge is aware of issue but has no fix yet" .

My 1500 is more tricky. Only surefire way is to set cruise and then accelerate to 115-120 and then let off gas. Once you let off gas you see the RPM's drop and you will plane out at about 1600 RPM's = 5th pretty much like clockwork. Been living with it and since both do it seems to be nature of the beast ( Hemi = Beast heh heh heh ).

Gonna check with a few dealers before warrenty on Durango runs out soon. In both my trucks if your planed out on level hyw at about 100k, rpm's are around 1600-1700 for 5th and 1800-1900 in 4th... ussually about a 200 rpm drop. Oh and just to mention ...No its not MDS I'm seeing engage and disengage, I am quite familiar with the difference. If you watch your Tach you will see RPM's slightly increase when MDS cuts down to 4 and decrease when it kick in all 8.... to the best of my knowledge.

Anyone else seeing this?

Mine shifts into 5th very smooth every time. normal driving its around 50 mph. hard acceleration, its as soon as i back out of the throttle a bit and start cruising.

theres def something wrong there. take it in and have it checked out. you may have some internal stuff goin on
