Default Transmission Slipping (started this morning)

This morning I noticed when I backed out of the garage I could not feel the truck shift into reverse.
I had to get the rpms to about 2000 before it would move.

When I shifted into drive it was the same thing. When I got down the street it was fine.

Well after work it was the same, maybe even a little worse.

I changed the fluid about two weeks ago. It may be a little low. When I just checked it, it was just below the add mark on the dipstick.

It did stall when leaving work and the check engine light came on.

need to take it to autozone and get the code read for free or if you have a tuner use that. Really need to know that code to starting pin pointing.

Just got back...

p0700, p0876, p0731 and p0734

They printed out the codes from their software but they are vague.

p0700 Transmission control module
P0876 Pressure switch rationality
p0731 Gear ratio error in first gear
p0734 Gear ratio error in fourth gear

How long had you been driving after checking the fluid level last time (up to operating temp) It's better if you had a scan tool, Super Chips, or trans gauge to know the exact temp. What was the outside temp at the time?

What trans fluid change happened? Drop pan and replace BOTH filters with 7 quarts? Driveway flush with 17+ quarts? Jiffy lube flush on the machine?

Do you know what trans fluid got put back in? For sure ATF+4 or something else? What brand and where did you buy it?

What truck/engine combo and year do you have? How many miles?

If you did the change, did you try to replace the filter gasket for the flat filter or leave the original in place?

I checked the fluid after the change. I did go on a one hour drive (1 hour each way). The other trips were about 20 min at a time. The outside temps have been in the 50-60 degrees.

I replaced both filters with 7 quarts of ATF +4 (dropped the pan).

It is an 03 with a 4.7

By filter gasket, do you mean the round rubber one? I did change that.

If you just changed the fluid two weeks ago then do yourself a favor and go out there and drop the trans pan and make sure the spin on filter is in place as it should be. More importantly, check that the new o-ring that came with the flat filter is pressed inside the trans as it should be and the filter is in place with the screw holding it in the trans.

I am assuming you DID replace the o-ring with the new one right?

I agree with Weed on this one. It is somewhat of a common problem that people have after trans fluid swaps. you need to make sure that the new flat filter o-ring is securely pressed into the trans, and that the flat filter "neck" is making a good seal in said o-ring. you also need to make sure that you are checking the fluid level after the truck is up to temp, and in neutral, not park if you haven't done that already.

Yep + 3 on the flat filter "O" ring.

The old "O" ring must be carefully removed and the seal face in the valve body not scored and a new one pressed firmly into place, flush with the valve body all around it's circumferance.
It can be a bit of a pig to do and some people miss this important step out because of this.

At their peril I say.

DO NOT put the "O" ring onto the end of the new flat filter and then push the whole assembly into place. There should be some literature with the new flat filter warning of this and the correct way to install it.
It must be "O" ring first into the valve body....then push firmly the flat filter pickup tube into it., Then tighten (carefully as the threads will stip) the flat filter bolt.

If you have done all this and are 100% + that you have .......then other issues with the transmission are your unfortunate problem.

Hope this helps?
Al.

I am pretty sure I got the O ring right. The old one came off pretty easy and I did put the new one onto the tranny first. Looking back, the only question I had is how far the neck of the filter pressed into the O ring.

Nateroach, you mentioned it is a fairly common problem. Does replacing the o ring and filter correct it or does it cause internal damage?

I broke down and brought it to a local shop. My concern is that I would take it apart, not find anything and have to buy another 7 quarts of fluid and filters. On the phone the shop owner that it may have been a some type of torque converter check valve. Is there such a thing?

Now my concern is that no matter what the issue, they will tell me I need a rebuild.
