I also have an 04 with the same problem. What works for me is to pop off the boot around the shifter and spray some electrical cleaner-moisture barrier in there. The only thing i can think of is that dirt falls in there since the shifter is on the floor. Good luck.

I had the identical problem, it was a simple and cheap fix. The part is called position sensor, cost about 32 bucks and took 15 minutes to replace. The sensor goes in the front of the transfer case. Make sure the oil ring is reinstalled.

did you have to go to the dealer for your sensor. cause i can't find it any where else mine hasn't worked since i blew up my old transfer case and got a used on put in. don't really need it to know if im in 4wd of not but it is nice to see incase i left it in 4wd and start cruising down the highway.

Sorry I looked at my post it don't make much sense, The indicator light worked in spring and when I used the 4x4, the other day the light didn't come on. haha the wife was nagging me to hurry up so I didn't get a chance to check my post out. Can I get the sensor anyplace other than the stealership?

Try putting it in 4wd drive and pull the shifter back Towards the seat and see if the light comes on. That was my problem m
