Default trans help

ok recently i bought a 02 dodge ram with 96000 miles it has been acting wierd in reverse at times ill give it gas and it will reverse fine then let off the gas and then go back on gas it revs up but seems like it doesn't move or at times wont move at all or move very slow even when i revving it to like 5000 rpms mainly on hills. This problem doesn't happen all the time but sometimes. I took it to the dealership i bought it from because i had a check engine light come on it came on as po736 which is reverse gear ratio incorrect they contacted there chrysler dealership and they said start by replacing trany fluid and filter so they changed that and the filter but still seems to do the same problem in reverse im starting to think neither the clutches r worn down in reverse and need rebuild or a sensor is going or a solenoid is clogged and needs replaced does anyone know what it could be or what should i do every other gear seems to drive perfectly fine help please

It sounds like rebuild time to me. It is an 02 with 96k+ on it. You bought it used and have no idea how it was maintained or abused. The gears are starting to go out and and so far changing the fluid and gears has done nothing. The solenoid pack is an assembly that get replaced as one piece but Im willing to bet with your age + mileage you are looking at a rebuild or replacement

Did the dealer tell you the CVI's or if the transmission pass a clutch test? And what was the condition of the fluid? Since you brought the truck from the dealer, did you also get a service contract for the powertrain? I know i ask a lot of questions, but thats what i do. I do work in a dealer as a transmission tech. I have seen problems with clutches as weedahoe had said, but have split seals on the valve body do the same thing.

The dealer needs to do a running diagnostics on the TCM to verify the issue. They should do a clutch holding test and a pressure test along with an input speed vs output speed test. There are a number of internal seals that could be torn or leaking to cause your issue.

If you just purchased it, I would drop it off to get fixed asap! Not sure what your used car warranty involves if there is such a thing in your state?? Here in NY we get 30days for that type of stuff.
Seems like someone traded it in knowing the issue was there and ofcourse the dealership wouldn't have known about it.

Does your truck have the 5.9 with the 46re trans in it? If so I would take it to the dealership and have bands checked and out adjusted to start. I think your reverse band may be shot or breaking. Just my .02

I have a '02 Ram 1500 with 46RE trans. I had mine rebuilt at 134,000. Wouldn't shift out of 1st gear. Just got in to drive home after work, put it in drive, and couldn't go over 20 mph ... wouldn't shift. Had some problems in the past with the shift solenoid but this time the trans was shot ... no warning or other issues. My transmission mechanic said that getting 134k out of these transmissions is considered good. I had them beef mine up a bit, shift kit and few extras. Works real nice now and hoping to get a little more than 134k out it.
