Default 4.7L Motor Swap

Hi there, I need a little bit of help here. I have an 02 dodge ram 1500 2wd. It has the 4.7l which they say is a junk motor. Well I blew the head gaskets and cracked the heads. So I have been lookin around for a motor and have a 4.7l motor out of a Dodge durango. It is a 2000. My question is will the motor out of the durango fit my dodge ram. Any advice would be great thanks

if you are gonna swap motors, get a 5.7 hemi, or an srt 10.

Since you have an 02, you'll have to find an 02 replacement because of the 16T crank tone wheel. After 02, it is a 32T so it's not going to work out.

It's my understanding that you could switch computers so a new 4.7 would work. But if you're going to do all that, you might as well put a hemi in there. That's what I am doing right now. I would think you would need the electronics from the 2000 if that's even doable.

When I looked for a 2002 4.7, they were mostly around $2000 shipped and that's with damn near 100k on them.

If you're willing and capable of doing the work, then upgrade. If it isn't worth it or you aren't capable, then find one as close as possible to your year with reasonable mileage ($2000 for damn near 100k engine = butt raped). You will need to (if possible) swap as many original parts as possible, i.e. sensors, tone wheel, intake manifold (if you don't upgrade to the '08) to make it work with your stock computer. As long as the computer gets the same inputs that is used to, as long as the engine is mechanically sound it will run.

If you don't want any headaches and don't really want to spend a whole bunch of money.Just put a 4.7 motor in that will work. They are really not junk motors,There are many of them that have gone well over 100,000 miles and are still going. If you do the maintenance like your really suppose to do they will last.I know a guy that has almost 200,000 on his 1500 and it runs like it's brand new.He just changes the oil every 3-5000 miles and does all of the recomended stuff when the times comes up

After you have a running engine again, then you can do cool stuff like tuning and cams and the intake (that's what I would do).

I totally agree. Made my decision to go with the hemi a lot easier. Just saying, if he wants zero compatibility headaches, a 2002 is what he'll need.

Id say go with a 4.7 then, but before you throw it in, do some mods to it. Changing a cam with motor out of body is a lot easier than inside. Goes for most upgrades.

Why not just buy some performance aftermarket heads and rebuild the engine?

Thats what I did years ago with one of my cars.

4.7 has 2 cams, one on top of each head. I agree though, it's a helluva lot easier to do mods with the engine out then climbing around everything.
