Default Transmission gurus...need URGENT help!

Ok, I did a trans drain/refill today. Drained all the fluid from the pan and replaced the filter. It was due, and then some.

But Here is the scary part...THESE were attached to the magnet in the pan!

trannypart3.jpg?t=1295408736

The quarter is just there for size comparison. But the metal 'strips' resemble piston rings. Just that they don't have as tight of an apparent radius to them. Unless there is a hidden piston in the trans pan that is about 8" across. It also makes me think of a snap ring. But I've been looking through the service manual and don't see anywhere in the pan where a snap ring is used...let alone one THAT size.

The truck drives and shifts fine now that the stupid kick down cable has been adjusted correctly.

But does ANYONE that is intimately familiar with the inside of these transmissions have any idea what this could be? I'm literally afraid to drive my truck now not knowing if the transmission is going to frag on me or not!

Any information would be greatly!!...GREATLY appreciated.

looks like a snap ring from one of the clutch packs... i read some where that these transmissions had a weak snap ring or two dont remember which ones, if thats the case the trans will fail sooner or later due to slipping or worn clutchs.. that snap ring is what holds the clutchs into the drum

Ok...good to know. Thanks.
But how the HELL does it get into the pan? I didn't see ANY place where it could 'slip' through... That boggles me.

if you remove the valve body ( you dont need to, just saying for reference) there are 3 or 4 holes in the case from manufacturing and drainage that measure 2"x2" or bigger. You can see the drive drums, it could easily fell threw to get to the pan.

personally, i would get that fixed, or fix it myself, before it leads to any serious problems...

Wow...thanks for the pictures. Auto trans scare the crap out of me...but that's mostly because I've never been inside one. How hard is it?
Is there any kind of gasket set or anything else I should know of before ripping into it? I've got the local stealership looking to see if they have the ring in stock...

THANKS!!!!!
